Saw this band in Atlanta at the Masquerade last week; they were amazing!! Infusing melody, atmosphere, a strong backbeat, and lyrics alternately acerbic and melancholic, The Static Age formed during the Fall of 2001. The product of three members of the idealistic side of the punk scene, a classically trained pianist, a handful of memories of what the radio used to be like, and a desire to write unique songs neither devoid of style nor dominated by it, the band developed a sound that pulls from a host of very cool influences, but manages to sound like nothing else before it. With hints of the post punk stylings of the Psychedelic Furs, the Cure, the Smiths, and the Chameleons UK; the textures of synth pop (ala New Order and Depeche Mode); undertones of what one reviewer labeled as "90s angst," dejection and, ultimately, passion; and a warm, worn voice which has been likened alternately to Richard Butler, Peter Gabriel, and Mike Ness, The Static Age, like all great bands before it with a shelf life of more than six months, defy simple categorization. As one reviewer wrote of their debut album, "The Static Age are forging their own musical path, and this is a beautiful beginning." The band has already completed a series of recordings (2002's "The Cost of Living" and "The Past and Now," and the forthcoming "Neon Nights Electric Lives" in addition to compilations and other singles) and extensive touring (stints with AFI, The Explosion, Drowningman, and many others, and a series of independent national tours). The Summer of 2004 brought about a new addition to The Static Age -- longtime musician and friend Sarah-Rose Cameron now plays keyboards. The Static Age is Bobby Hackney, Adam Meilleur, Sarah-Rose Cameron, and Andrew Paley.

I have the CD The Cost of Living. I tried for over a year to find it, no luck, them found it easily available through gemm.

Awesome! Yeah, I often play them at my DJ night, and people always ask who it is ... they are surprised when they find out it's new!! Did you hear the new song "Amphibian?" I agree with you about The Cost of Living - it's excellent!
