Yep I was one-WWSP in central wisconsin-that's where I fell in love with my beloved echo-cramps-X-XTC-paisley underground music (true fact I had a striped "psychedelic" turtleneck I got from a thrift shop and wore roger mcguinn glasses) and here's the weird thing I'm back in college radio as a faculty advisor-doing a radio show this summer and playing a lot of the same music.

What station were you at and give us a baker's dozen of bands you almost always put in your set list-here's mine:

Sorta...while in college (Purdue) I worked weekends at a EZ Listening commercial station, WCSI (Indianapolis) fom 1992-1994. Hated every minute of it. If the format was different, I would have lasted longer.

WOCC at a community college in Syracuse. Typical mixed bag of playlists. I only played popular new wave & power pop.

I later got a job at an AOR station, which sucked, then worked at a Country Station for 3 years which became tolerable over time. It was funny to hear certain country artists incorporate new wavey synths or guitars into their songs. Always desperate for a hit I guess.

When I moved to Dayton, OH I was 34, married and had just had my first child in 1986.

I found WYSO, knew it was a public radio station and called the program director out of the blue. I told him I was interested in working on air again.
He agreed to meet me and I went to the college and talked to him.
He asked me what I wanted to program.
I said whatever I feel like playing.
He said, "that's exactly what I'm looking for" and put me on the schedule.
I started out on Wednesday, midnight to 6.
I ended up on Fridays 10PM-2AM.

Jim, I probably listened to you during those years. I attended Pitt from Jan 82 to Apr 85. All I can say is THANKS. There was no station other than CMU's worth listening to. That is unless you're the guy who did the reggae show. If you are, then I apologize for calling and bitching to go back to the New Wave format. Jeff.

hey Jim2,
that's kind of what the situation was at KAOS 89.3 FM Olympia at Evergreen State College. I helped dj even though I wasn't a student there.
At that time, in 1985, I was discovering punk, so we'd play:

Cabaret Voltaire

there were other djs playing even better stuff, more underground new wave. This furthered my interest in the truly obscure NW tunes

My own college radio station, in Fairbanks Alaska (I can't even remember the name) was horrible--they were AOR and commercial. In the middle of the night, they'd experiment more, but it was daytime sadness.

I was a DJ at WWUH in West Hartford, CT from 1985 - 1989. Did some really horrible times slots and played some really fantastic music! I also went by the Godawful name of Matt Everest! I just pulled out a few old cassettes I made of shows. Here's the baker's dozen...

1977 - 1981

What a great time.

This was where the "progressive rock" era ended and "new wave" began.

The punk scene was just starting -- Ramones, Sex Pistols
Blondie had their first album, also Talking Heads. Saw them New Years Eve 1979-1980 (I think) in NYC.
U2's album "Boy".

Jim2 mentioned Blotto - - They were from the Albany area, and were formerly known as "The Star-Spangled Washboard Band".

The most interesting story: The IBC convention in Boston. Girls in NYC police uniforms were running around the convention handing out tickets to see this great new act called "The Police". Few had heard of them.

After that, they got college radio airplay.
