h20 were Scottish, from Glasgow.


Ian Donaldson - lead vocals
Pete Kean - guitar
Colin Ferguson (not the actor, nor the guy who shot a bunch of people on a train) - bass
Ross Alcock - keyboards
Colin Gavigan - sax
Kenneth Dorman - drums


The song (a UK #17 hit) is known as both "I Dream to Sleep" and "Dream to Sleep." The 12" I have has "I Dream to Sleep" on the sleeve, and "Dream to Sleep" on the record. It also has a photo of the six on the back, but I have no idea who's who. The single, and its B-side, "Burn to Win," were produced by Tony Cox and written by all members.

They had another UK top 40 hit with "Just Outside of Heaven," as well as a couple other failed singles and an album I haven't heard.

My favorite H2O song is "Turn Back in Anger" which was the B-side of their "All That Glitters" 12". Great song!!

The only thing I'd add is that the name is H2O, not H2zero. I see it typed wrong all the time. It may simply be a typo, since the 'O' and '0' keys are right next to each other, but I thought I'd bring it up just in case. I say this with a helpful tone, not a condescending one [:)]

I failed science.

The lowercase "H" wasn't a typo, though. That's how it's written on the sleeve. Although now that I look at it, all the letters are lowercase.

That's them. I found some recent pics of Donaldson on Al Gore's internet but still don't know which one he is. Maybe the Tony Hadley lookalike in the front. Which makes sense -- "Burn to Win" is a blatant Spandau Ballet clone.

allmusic states their guitarist was Davie Wells. He's not credited on this.

I don't own a copy of "Faith" -- or anything else -- but according to the Library of Congress, it was released in June, 1984, and this is the tracklisting...

Ian Donalson is indeed the "pensive" poser at the front. FYI, he is currently fronting the band "four good men" (www.fourgoodmen.com) which also features former Simple Minds Derek Forbes and Mick MacNeil, along with Big Country guitarist Bruce Watson.
I saw them live a few times back in Scotland ,including their first ever show at an outdoor rally in Elder Park. Their Bass player at that time was aguy called Alan McGhee, who went on to become the Mega manager of OASIS !

"Electrified by the Spirit of Punk in 1976, Ian [Donaldson] formed SKROO while still at Art School. Regular appearances at the legendary Mars Bar in Glasglow quickly established the band as 'faces' in the local scene. Unfortunately, by 1978, the Punk Revolution was already in its death throes. It had become main stream and was no longer fun, so he decided to change musical direction. He placed an advert in a local music shop looking for musicians to form a new band. A bass player by the name of Alan McGee answered. They wrote a set of songs in a week and after recruiting a guitarist and drummer performed for the first time as H2O in early 1979 at an open air CND Rally in Govan, Glasgow.

"Not long after, Alan left the band and moved to London where he started Creation Records. He signed Oasis and Primal Scream. Ian expanded H2O's line up with keyboards and saxophone. 'Hollywood Dream' was released on the band's independent SPOCK label in 1980. All 2000 copies sold out in a fortnight. [Editor's note: That means two weeks.] This lead to the band's first TV appearance on a show called Street Buzz. With VCR copies of the 3 songs they performed live in front of a studio audience, Ian went to London for a week where he stayed with friends. His mission was to try to interest record and publishing companies in the band.

"The initial response was very positive and after the 'We'll need to see you live, let's record some demos, have you got management, a lawyer, scenario' the band signed to RCA in 1982. 'Dream to Sleep' was released in early 83 and was an immediate hit in the UK and throughout Europe. 'Just Outside of Heaven' also charted the same year as did their debut album 'Faith'.

"A change of label took the band to newly formed Legend Records. The single, 'Blue Diamond' was the first release. It received massive airplay but didn't quite reach the top 40."
