What is termed "techno" on this poll could be, perhaps, dance-y synth ?? B/c then actually, that's more up my alley.

New Wave, of course, is just an umbrella term created by people in the music industry for marketing purposes. It was used to describe a particular era (following the birth of punk rock)when the old guard was giving way to a new sound of youth rebellion.

Nowadays it seems like there are more "labels" than people (emo,screamo,neo wave,new new wave,trance,rave,garage,jungle,
scene,shoegaze,trad rock,dadrock,ragecore,etc...) but back in the early eighties (when I was in high school) these were by far the largest scenes around. I would lump the post-punks in with the punks
since many of them embraced the political posturing of the clash and stood in stark contrast to the hardcore kids.

As for powerpop? I don't seem to remember a distinct "scene" developing around the genre as the genre itself is hard to define. Wouldn't the Jam, or the Attractions, or the Go-Go's be considered powerpop? I dunno. Just my opinion.

Toss-up between punk and powerpop. Basically I like my guitars loud and fast.

Post-Punk the most for me - Chameleons, The Sound, Comsat Angels, The Opposition, etc...kind of sound for me.

Then, I also dig power pop big time, lots of guitars and great harmonizing, and also the jangly guitar sound of such greats as The Windbreakers, Guadalcanal Diary, Pop Art, Flying Color, The Watermelon Men, The Playmates, etc, etc....

Also loved the paisley, neo-psych movement in the 80s with bands like Three O'Clock, Rain Parade, Plasticland, Eyes of Mind, The Point, The Prisoners.....and the great 80s garage bands that kicked ass, like The Vipers.

The darker, colder, earlier new wave bands like Experimental Products, Twice A Man, Drinking Electricity, Music For Pleasure, etc...

And of course, all the great synth, dance, pop, punk, those fabulous little indie 45s that were true gems, and the great reggae releases that hit in the 80s, Black Uhuru especially for me. As for the punk stuff, for me it has to be Fear - The Record as my top punk favorite. Every song is so tight, so well done, so blazingly perfectly done. Does anyone remember that great little verbal exhange on The Decline of Western Civilization, when Fear is about ready to play a song, and Lee Ving is talking to the crowd, and someone blurts out "eat my fuck" and Lee Ving responds (I think it was him) with "What does eat my fuck mean?" before they break into a musical rage - fun stuff.

So much great music in the 80s, truly a wealth of sounds of every kind. The only thing I did not get into, or at least very limited, was the Heavy Metal. I could listen, but it was not high on my list to have to have it.
