Could you please give me a rough description and/or rating of the following Bill Nelson's records ?

Ok, for a description I'd offer the following: most of these consisted of a flat piece of pressed vinyl (usually black), which was often in a paper or polyurethane sleeve, which was in turn encased in a decorative cardboard cover.

As far as rating Bill's work, I'd give most of it a 7/10, with the occasional work making the grade at a very respectable 9/10.

I'd recommend you to buy,the not mentioned record of him here,the''Sound on Sound''as Bill Nelson's Red Noise from 1979.Excellent piece of quirky new wavish techno pop with chord changes,futuristic vision and a step before what new romantics would do after two years.As for the others most of them are in high standards, but personally i prefer''Love that whirls''for the magic synth pop inside.

I'd have to agree with firefall. I only have two discs by Bill Nelson and they are Sound On Sound & Love That Whirls. At the very least start with these.

Firefall, åõ÷áñéóôþ ðïëý! What I have heard of him, is a track posted some time ago here, which I had been looking for, some time now, "the cabinet of Dr Caligari", dark-synthpop. Therefore, I will definetely buy the 2 records below that title, hoping they are the same style.

I also quite enjoy some of his earlier stuff with Be Bop Deluxe.

Also a big fan of his late 70s through mid-80s releases. While a different sound altogether for the most part, egg-roger's mention of Be-Bop Deluxe, Nelson's earlier group, would also come highly recommended, any of them really. But expect a more artsy pop-rock sound from these releases, great ones that they are. There is just something about the Be-Bop Deluxe sound I really enjoy, very well crafted songs.

I'm also interested in exploring other Bill Nelson music.I have Vistamix and the instumental Practically Wired ,which I like quite alot,are any of the above mentioned similar to Practically Wired?

I'm a huge fan and have around 40 cd's from Be Bop Deluxe and spanning Nelson's career up to his latest stuff.

"Sound on Sound" is great, the most "New Wave" album.
His first solo, "Quit Dreaming and get on the beam", wqas supposed to be the 2nd Red noise Album, it's really good.

Love that Whirls remains his most famous record, its one of my all-time top 10's. A must. It was re-released recently and worth snapping up.

Chimera is pretty good early 80' pop, includes Mick Karn from Japan on one song.


of the 90's stuff, "After the Satellite Sings", "Weird Critters", "Magnificent Dream People" and "Blue Moons and Laughing Guitars" are terific,

Check out his website, he writes a great diary and still puts out 2-3 albums peer year. Amazingly prolific.

"After the Satellite Sings", "Weird Critters", "Magnificent Dream People" and "Blue Moons and Laughing Guitars" are all from the same era, more song oriented, but sonicly similar.

Bill continues to release a lot of stuff, check out his website for his numerous instrumental only albums.
