New Wave Outpost Forum

Back in the early 80's when music video was new and exciting, there were a number of artists who had hits due to their videos. Two that come to mind are Taco and Wham U.K. OK, in retrospect, we can easily say these guys were not new wave. But, back in the day when you first watched their videos, did you think they were new wave then?

I remember when I first saw Taco's video, "Puttin' On The Ritz", I thought he was a new wave guy doing old standards. Definitely thought it was odd.
Wham UK did not strike me as new wave when I saw their video back in 1982.

I've always thought of them as New Wave. Taco definitely but Wham has their moments. A lot of New Wavers liked them but their music crosses over to Disco and Adult Contemporary. Careless Whisper for instance would always be included with my Adult Conte

Taco maybe, but Wham and Pat Benatar definitely not.

Nah, I wouldn't say any of those in ElectricLash's list New Wave. They were more guitar-oriented, more like bar/pub rock.

However, it's funny that you mention Dream Syndicate. They were the first time I listened to anything NOT New Wave, and right aft

Pat Benatar-? No but she did get popular at the right time to be noticed by new wavers, especially the clothes.

Pat Benatar - No, but a lot of my New Wave friends liked her (including me.) She also started her career with a decidedly New Waveish song - 1979's "We Live For Love."

I don't know of anybody listening to this guy anymore. 'Tis a shame.

I personally don't care if the Dream Syndicate, True West, Three O'Clock and Long Ryders are New Wave or not-I love them

Gazebo is Italo Disco which in my opinion is New Wave.

I don't know- I heard that Simon used to shoot up with Johnny Thunders-and that Theodore spent a lost weekend in Vegas with Stiv Bators-but those may just be rumours.
