To most fans of the old school Punk, from the 70's and early 80's most fans of that genre, feel that The Sex Pistols were as great as you can get from that genre,and that they were what The Beatles were to 60's pop,The Pistols were to Punk.Or to the casual fan were The Sex Pistols nothing more than a disgrace because of who they were,and because of the music they played?

What I mean by The Pistols being what The Beatles were to the 60's,I mean as far as being Punk legends are concerned.And I'm not saying that the Beatles were Punk.I'm just going by big as in popularity and being famous.What The Pistols were to Punk,some can say that they were just as big as The Beatles and even The Who,in name and in a different place in time.But those casual fans will beg to differ only because they look at The Pistols being nothing more than a disgrace,because of who they were,and the music they played.Alot of casual fans hate Punk.Only the true fans of Punk,hardcore,and New Wave will say differently.

Do any of you agree? But in the long run,no matter what The Sex Pistols will always remain legends in the eyes of Punk fans.

This whole 'who was the godfather of punk/new wave' game can go in circles forever....

But I ALWAYS turn to the Pistols (yes I know historians will point out the Ramones were 1st etc etc). The Pistols' LOOK/ATTITUDE was the start of something huge.

No, they were more like the Gerry and the Pacemakers of punk.

No, just kidding. Bands like Television, the Dead Boys and the especially the Ramones started it, but the Sex Pistols brought punk to the masses' attention.

I'd have to say,just in terms of sheer impact,the Sex Pistols were the "Punk Beatles". Even people with no interest in Punk at all know who the Pistols are. Quite an amazing accomplishment when you think about it.

I have to agree with Pikey about The Clash. Yeah, we read about the Sex Pistols in the tabloids, but it was the Clash who elevated punk into the mainstream and to all types of peoples.

Remember, by thier own admissions, the Pistols were more of a gimmick. A creation by Malcolm Mc Claren. The Clash should definetly get some consideration as the "Beatles of Punk", however, I might give the nod to The Modern Lovers.

And the winner is oops,it's Adam And The Ants who were the Punk Beatles of the late 70's and early 80's.Adam Ant was the Paul McCartney Punk darling of the band.

Glen Matlock was the Paul McCartney of the band. The Pistols kicked him out and McCartney, as we all know, died in a tragic car crash in 1966 and the Beatles hired a double named William Campbell to replace him.
