As my mum was having an extension done to her house this summer, I had the opportunity to go through and sort out all of my old stuff still stored in her attic (...well, I say 'opportunity', it was more a case of "sort this stuff out or it's getting chucked out!!")

I found loads of old tapes, and one was The Smiths so I've been listening to "how soon is now?" a lot recently...I love that song but I'm sure it's either a cover or has been covered loads.

Any help on who/why/what?

Funny you should mention the Smiths. I'm actually listening to Morrissey as I type! But anyway, I really doubt that "How Soon Is Now" was a cover though I don't really know for sure. Then again, how many covers did the Smiths ever do? "How Soon Is Now" was covered LOADS of times. The bands that come to mind right away are:

- Quicksand
- Snake River Conspiracy
- Everclear
- Meatmen

There definitely are others.....

not to mention Soho sampling the main riff for their semi-hit Hippychick in what, '92-'93 or so.

The craft soundtrack had the best version I have ever heard! I forget who sang it- I think it was love spit love.

The credits on "How Soon Is Now?" lists Morrissey & Marr, so I would say that kinda settles the question of whether it's an original or cover.

"How Soon Is Now" is not a cover tune, it's a Smiths original but it's been covered by Love Spit Love (Richard Butler's other band) and those wacky faux-lesbians TaTu recently.

Damn good song, by the way. Definitely a defining 80's song, without question. Boy, was I upset when Morrissey did'nt perform it when he played at the Apollo, NYC earlier this year! He did play some other classic Smiths songs, though - so I was happy!!

"How Soon is Now?" was always in my very favorite Top 3 of all.

Remember back in the day when it languished in obscurity for so long ? And only the coolest New Wavers knew it ? Back then, it was truly an "alternative" song...non-one else had really heard of it. But then, in the late 80's, you had that SoHo song "Hippy Chick", which sampled it, and then some covers of it came out; and then you started to hear its familiar, almost gothy riff in 80's retrospective shows, "MTV" revisited, etc.--and then it became ubiquitous, and suddenly it seemed you started hearing it everywhere....wow !

This song has DEFINATELY held up well thru the years....

The Love Spit Love cover of HSIN can be found on The Craft soundtrack...

Anybody else feel a little dated when TJOT said he found his MUMS Smith's tape amoungst some of her OLD stuff?

Was it that long ago? Seems like just yesterday I saw their first show in the US.

I'm a fan of The Meatmen version. Snake River Conspiracy also do a fantastic cover of "Lovesong" by The Cure.

there was also a gay band who covered "hippychick" but renamed it "hippy dick"... sadly i can't remember their name... [:I]
