Hi all. Listening to Echo & the Bunnymen - "The Cutter", I realized how much of a panoramic, 'Wall of Sound' style it has... and how much I like the style.

Seems to me like the following songs/bands might belong to a NW WoS category:
Tears for Fears - "Sowing the Seeds of Love"
XTC - "Mayor of Simpleton"
Propaganda - "Duel"
Simple Minds - "Alive and Kicking"
Jesus & Mary Chain - lots of examples

So, is this a valid NW sub-category (or am I just making it up)? What are the essential elements in WoS - is an orchestra a prequisite? What songs/bands would you add?

I actually think I can understand what you're going for Dave and, though pretty, I don't think I agree w/Dave's suggestions (though, don't get me wrong, I LOVE those songs).

You outta make it a category if it isn't Dave - I like it. I think I get it, especially if you mean part like the secondary chorus late in "The Cutter" that goes "Am I the happy loss, will I still recoil, when the skin is lost" etc, and it's kinda dreamy

So maybe more "Bring On the Dancing Horses", "Vienna", or "If You Leave", if I'm getting it right?

Also, jfiber, lol to the thought of pumping a fist in the air to "Understanding Jane". I get your point though...

When I think "new wave wall of sound," I think "Love and Loneliness" by the Motors. Yes?

For totally over-the-top, Phil Spectoresque wall of sound, check out "Little Does She Know" by the Kursaal Flyers (who later morphed into the Records).

I was going to say "Dazzle", but since it was already mentioned, I'll add "Fireworks" by Sioxsie and the Banshees as well. And after seeing his nick, I believe "Romanticide" by Combo Audio might qualify.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm definately going to check out the ones I'm not familiar with. It probably was a mistake to include JAMC (maybe a separate subcategory for make-your-ears-bleed-wall-of-sound?).

Not NW, but one more comes to mind... Verve - Bitterweet Symphony. This ones captures the "orchestra" comment. A lot of Beatles songs had the same quality, thanks in large part to George Martin... uh oh, I'm way off topic now [:o)]

How about the whole Siouxsie-Hyaena album?

"Primitive Painters" - Felt.
I think the way Liz Fraser's voice just wails against the swirly buildup of sound at the end adds to that big, all-encompassing feel.

Came across another good one... Elvis Costello - Oliver's Army. Should have guessed Elvis would have at some good examples.
