So, is todays youth (teen through twenties) really into our music. I was watching Laguna Beach with my son and there was a kid wearing a DK (Dead Kennedy's) shirt. A tv commercial has twenty somethings rattleing off 80's songs like rock lobster and one of them says rubber biscuit. They weren't even alive back then. My guess is that the writers writing these shows and commercials are like us and these actors have no clue who Dead Kennedys are or what a rubber buscuit is. I may be wrong in some cases but it leads me to wonder if
A) I should be pissed that these teens who have no clue are horning in on our shit because it's "Retro"

or

B) Sweet, they're keeping the magic alive.

I choose B as long as they are truely keeping the faith and not trying to be trendy or Posers. My son likes the Clash and all but his ipod is crammed full mostly of new stuff like Panic at the Disco or My Chemical Romance. Any other insights about 80's music or pop culture popping up in "made for teens-twenties" media.

Rrrruber biscut...lol. Hard to say it in your mind without the original accent.

I guess C) Nod the knowing nod of knowing what it was really about and move on. I doubt they're really keeping anything alive except the general sense of cool the logo has as yet another suburban accessory like a V-cast phone or Hollister sweatshirt. No harm or help.

I think it's like the 50's craze we went through in the mid-70's. It was fun & cute & people only looked at the "cool" aspect of it. Then it became an institution & "your parent's music" again.

Yup, Thats what I had thought about as well. I remember thinking Buddy Holly was pretty cool... and he was [;)]
Although growing up as a young suburban punk in orange county (and I was) going to the shows, slam pits stage dives, drunk, tatoo, mohawk, rebellion the whole nine yards It makes me wish these kids, posers whatever could at least have been there to see what it was really all about. If I hear an Agent Orange song I flashback to my friends picking me up from Montgomery Ward were I worked and going to an abandond house in Fullerton to see agent orange and the circle jerks play. It was awesome. The music, fights, stage dive off of the roof, skate punks in the empty pool catching air. I read in the paper the next day that the vacant house burned to the ground. As an adult and a father now I don't neccesarily agree with that but that whole gig was as punk as you could possibly get.

It's interesting to hear it and see it on TV and in the mall on T-shirts, but I DREAD what I'd sound like to some kid as I tried to explain "the real essence of what makes this music so truly exciting!!!"

...kid thinking "yeah, whatever, old man, blah blah blah.......!"

I once told some kids on bikes that rode out in front of my car that "If they were going to ride like idiots they should wear helmets" One flipped me off and said "Fuck You old man!!!"

I like to mess with the kids at my school whenever I see one wearing a RAMONES or DKs shirt (or something similar, having been sold and bought at your friendly neighborhood Hot Topic Store at the mall):
I'll say to them: "cool shirt! So, what's your favorite song by them ?" and giggle inside as they make a face and have no answer. Ha ha ha ha ha....
But it still makes my day to see those shirts, though.[:)]
