Numan is not gay, in fact he's happily married to a real woman.
I never cared what turned on the singers I enjoyed. It wasn't til about 1986 that I realised Fred Schneider was gay.
But if I must choose based on this criteria:
Fred Schnieder
Klaus Nomi
Pete Shelley
geez, I don't even know who's straight or gay. Is it an issue?

My vote would go to Andy Bell of Erasure. He's got the best singing voice of the lot IMHO.

Not an issue for me either. In fact I'm a bit of a gay rights activist.
Grassy: Bloke out of the Buzzcocks, that would be Pete Shelley
Ollie: I nearly died laughing reading "Numan is married to a real woman" -- heh, what does that mean? LOL!
I am glad Klaus Nomi was mentioned too. Here's another one to add to the list, John Sex. I loved his song, "Hustle With My Muscle." Then there was Joey Arias. Both artists were featured in a movie called "Mondo New York."

As I recall, Gary Numan claimed he NEARLY married a human.....

Neil Tennant - dragged kicking and screaming out of the closet. Andy Bell, Jimmy Sommerville of course.
How about a thread on most openly gay song? Handsome Devil by the Smiths gets my vote.

Not a singer but I would butter Keith (B-52's) Strickland's buns for him any day!

Smiths could be argued. Was it openly gay or him just being subversive and playful? How about the Damned's Jet Boy Jet Girl? "He gives me head"?? Again, maybe just some subterfuge, I don't know. I would think there must be some Wayne County song...but now that he's a woman, I guess she's not gay, yes, no?
My official vote goes to Jimmy Summerville's "For A Friend", a beautiful and heartfelt song that I recommend anyone to check out.

Speaking as a gay man myself, the issue of gay or straight has never been an issue with me. The best gay 80's artist has to be Jimmy Sommervile. The best gay song of the 80's probably Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat. A few other artists to add to the list would be Michael Stipe and Bob Mould. Though both of them came out in the 90's.

1) Andy Bell - Erasure
2) Doug Pinnick - Kings X
3) Freddie Mercury - Queen
4) Neil Tennant - Pet Shop Boys
5) Michael Stipe - REM (I heard he is gay, or maybe it was bi I don't know)
Doesn't make a great deal of difference to me.....
