In the spirit of the "mushy gushy love songs" and "wistful song" threads (man, I love those threads), how about…

…songs that absolutely bring you to your knees? Somber, sad songs. The ones that leave you kinda quiet listening to them.

my list of songs that haunt me:
"Atmosphere" Joy Division
"Enigma of the Absolute" Dead Can Dance
"From the Flagstones" Cocteau Twins
most of the songs on the Blood LP by This Mortal Coil
and, the macdaddy of them all for me,
"Pink Frost" The Chills, whose video I just saw for the first time at http://www.nzmusic.com/track.cfm?i=2238. Wow.

No New Wave tracks come to mind... Forsaken (vocal version) by VNV Nation always leaves me a little emotional, especially live.

Good one. I'm sure there are lots I'm overlooking but...

"Second Skin" - The Chameleons
"The Host of Seraphim" - Dead Can Dance
"Of All the Things We've Made" - OMD
"Renee" (esp. the chorus) - Talk Talk
"Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" - Ultravox

"Too Pieces" by Yaz makes me want to crawl into bed and pull the covers over my head. It's so sad and hopeful at the same time--reminds me of the line from "Tender Is The Night," "was it only an hour ago she had waited, wearing her hope like a corsage at

It may be a bit of a cliché to say, but U2's "Pride (In The Name of Love") always gets me a little.[:(]

The sadness of "Family Snapshot" by Peter Gabriel stuns me everytime I hear it. It obviously seems to be about the JFK assassination but then also has to do with a kid dealing with his parents divorce.

All turned quiet-i have been here before

I'll have to think about this more to respond with a list, but let me just tell you just about any Ultravox songs puts tears in my eyes. I feel a lot when I listen to their music.

And of course there is always Joy Division. :D

Not sure any new wave "devastates" me, but Hexicon's "Only You" suggestion comes close. Maybe also Joe Jackson's "Breaking Us in Two" and Human League's "Seconds".

Not really new wave but two from late in that era were Everything But the Girl's "Britis

um, I know there's more, but I really should do

Being from New York, the September 11th horror changed my life. I live in a part of Bklyn that is all cops and firemen. And after the attack, every day for weeks there was a funeral. Soo many people from my area died. I watched the buildings go down. Then

Even though it's a rockin' song-"Understanding Jane" by the Icicle works chills me to the bone-it's a really sad song durn it. Actually a Million Miles away is in the same category-it's really sad. too.

.. I would put..
Enola Gay - OMD
Forever Young - AlphaVille

I think many of us will always be able to answer a hypothetical Alex Trebek's final Jeopardy question, "This was the time the very 1st Atomic Bomb was dropped" .. thanks to OMD....
