BUSINESSTALKRADIO.NET, INC. PURCHASES THREE MORE STATIONS
The sale of Long Island stations WLIR-FM(107.1), WBON-FM(98.5) and

WDRE-FM( 105.3) to BusinessTalkRadio.net, Inc. has been announced.

The announcement was made by Michael L. Metter, President and CEO of Business TalkRadio.net, Inc. and Ronald Morey, Founder of The Morey Organization and Jarad Broadcasting.

“I am very excited about this latest acquisition,” Metter said.

“Having grown up in the NY City area, I was weaned on the heritage cutting edge rock station WLIR-FM and in later years was an avid fan of the former modern rock format of WDRE-FM.

Many groups got their start on WLIR-FM and just as it was the showcase for new talent in the past, we expect to make that happen again,” he said.

“It is a great opportunity to enhance the formats and develop new cutting edge programming to syndicate nationally, with the stations being the flagship for these new shows.

“This continues to expand our business model of interesting and unique programming throughout the country,”he added.

“Ron Morey is a very talented radio executive who has done a great job in building premiere radio properties and we hope to take them to the next level,” Metter said.

Metter added that the company will LMA WBON-FM with the company’s business and lifestyle formats as of Janaury 1. The other stations will follow with LMA’s March 1, until the acquisition is approved by the FCC.

I'm not expecting the old WLIR but this could be interesting.

Metter added that the company plans to move the signal tower for WLIR, 107.1-FM, west so it covers a greater part of Long Island.

"We hope to bring WLIR back to all of, or at least most of, Long Island, the way it was back when it was on 92.7," Metter said.

That would be great. I am tired of listening to WLIR through the computer with the speakers up as high as they go.

I don't blame them for making money, but the Moreys have done an incredible job of killing the Long Island music scene in the past ten years:

- Selling the old WLIR to the Spanish broadcasting co. (Univision?)
- Selling live venue the Vanderbilt to Off Track Betting for use as a "race palace"
- Buying the "Island Ear" (which did a nice job of covering local artists) and turning it into the unreadable, and local-music-deaf "Long Island Press" (hope they shut that down soon too!)

Hopefully the new owners make good on reviving some of the WLIR magic from when I interned there in the 80's!

I guess that tool Jed Morey now can fully focus on his lame failure of a political career. The sale of the 92.7 signal to finance his failed run for mayor of Great Neck was the saddest selling off of something valuable to tens of thousands of music fans that I've experienced.

In a way, having the Moreys take over where WLIR left off with WDRE in 87 may have hurt alternative radio more than if they hadn't. Perhaps it would have left an opening for a full-market NYC station (and real broadcasting company) covering the entire metro and exposing more than the priveleged few that could get their signal north and east of the city. Then again, with how lame and conservative NYC radio is, maybe not.

Anyway, goodbye TMO and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

My gut reaction from reading that news item about being cutting edge at one time makes me think they want to shift the sound to one similar to WXRV, "The River" in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

The station, just a few miles from Boston, brings in up and coming as well as established artists all the time for live on air concerts and interviews. They still play the occassional obscure New Wave tune but mostly focus on adult oriented, mellower album rock.
