Best Selling NW Groups/Solo Artists of All Time?

Can someone compile an accurate list of the 10 best selling groups/artists of NW ever? It would be interesting to see what the groups are. I suspect Depeche Mode, U2, The Police, Blondie, REM, Duran Duran to be on this list.

My bet would be something like...

1. U2
- huge gap -
2. The Cars
3. The Police
4. R.E.M.
5. INXS
6. Duran Duran
7. Depeche Mode
8. Blondie
- another gap -
9 & 10 = Devo? Pretenders? Cure? Smiths? B-52's?

Of other 80s artists, I'm sure Madonna outstrips all of them, and the likes of Tom Petty and Prince are between U2 and The Cars. It's really about mainstream, crossover appeal.

I'm sure Jason could come up with a very accurate list. I like Blir's list, but I can help but think DM would be higher. Maybe, the Cure also.

I'd stake big money they're not. They didn't have the crossover the others did. 1-6 had huge crossover. DM and Cure had a huge base in "our" world but less so in the "real" world. That's why I think INXS is up there too...very broad base worldwide.

Checked the riaa site for US only album sales top 100.

U2 50.5
Cars 23.5
Police 22.5
REM 19.5
INXS 14.5
Duran Duran 12
Depeche Mode 10.5

It would be interesting to get the worldwide sales to see how successful the bands are internationally. I would bet that Depeche Mode would be easily in the top 5. I always read that Blondie sold some 40 million records worldwide and most of that during their very short peak 78-81, sounds pretty impressive.

Does anyone have the know-how to compile the top 10 worldwide list?

Crossover like mainstream thingie? that's what I like about DM and The Cure.. There Huge worldwide, But still they have an underground tag on them.. something that Duran duran, REM, The Police, U2 and all the Mainstream Bands would die for..

I think REM, DM, Duran Duran, Blondie, the Cure, Clash all have mainstream and underground appeal. I think U2 doesn't have the underground, alternative appeal anymore and it's not so much because they are so huge, I think it's their sound and image that's too mainstream but then again you can argue that they sound and image are too mainstream because they have become so big.
