It seems like this instrument has almost disappeared from pop music. I remember hearing it so much during the 80s. Or is it just me?

Not just you. Men at Work, Double, Hall & Oates, Level 42, Huey Lewis, etc etc all used the saxaphone in prominent roles. I think what killed it's wide use was the scourge that was and is Kenny G.

What about Rob Lowe, bar band star, playing the sax in St. Elmo's Fire? Now there's a soundtrack you need to compile, Hut. If it's not already done that is.....and if it is, how complte is it? Hmmmmm.....

edit: Actually, you need to do a sax compilation with the aforementioned bands, plus more. And it shall be called, "We Miss the Saxaphone" [:p]

Im about to buy a used sax ...ive never played, but I think I could do it well enough pretty quick to add a different sound for my new bands recordings....

I really like Spear Of Destinys use of the sax on their album 'Grapes Of Wrath' (a band and album I rarely if ever see mentioned on this site)..

Of course Roxys use of the sax is amazing....

Outside of the 'Smooth Jazz' genre, you'll be hard pressed to hear that instrument accompanying any contemporary music tracks dating back to the late 80's. (Thank Grunge for that)

A lot of new wave/punk/post-punk bands (not to mention so many of the two-tone and ska bands) used the saxophone in the 1970s and 1980s. I think the trend started with X-Ray Spex, and Lora Logic. I recall reading in many books on the Brit punk movement how their was initially such a backlash against X-Ray Spex by many of the other punk bands and fans because the saxophone wasn't a "punk" instrument. Apparently, that backlash didn't last long however and the band became favorites amongst their punk peers and fans.

I've noticed that as well - that the sax is no longer even bothered with. It seems as though the industry has found the perfect pop formula that sells and they don't deviate from the mostly pre-fab hit-making process.

A few other Wavers that used the sax either prominently or sparingly:

Fay Ray
Siouxsie and the Banshees ("Join Hands")
Essential Logic
The Models
Hazel O'Connor
Madness
The Selecter
The Specials
Duran Duran
Heaven 17
Spandau Ballet

Just to name a few.

I've always liked the sound of the sax and was partial to bands who used it.

Who could forget Fishbone? I think it's Angelo that plays the sax? I saw them in Hollywood once and that guy was all over the place with his sax. In the crowd, all over the place. Great, great show.

Having said that, nobody has specifically mentioned the supreme saxophonist, James Chance! Starting out in the new wave/no wave Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (led by Lydia Lunch), he left and formed James Chance and the Contortions (classic track = Contort Yourself). Subsequent bands included James White and the Blacks, James Black and the Whites, and The Flaming Demonics. He was especially known for his confrontational style. He still plays occasionally, and his albums have been rereleased on Ze Records.
He was managed by/romantically linked with downtown NYC glam celebrity Anya Phillips (who died tragically young).
