New Wave Outpost Forum

Kind of as a bookend to my earlier Beatles post, Who in your mind were the "Lennon/McCartney" of the New Wave era?

Split Enz, love the wit and sarcasim, as well as some cool lyric licks, second Squeeze, catchy lyrics; third The Clash are biting, just like our New Zealand brethern a little better, that's all.

Note to self, when I was younger I think I would have picked The Clash, then Squeeze, then Split Enz in that order, must be getting old (yes) and more convervative in my new wave lisening tates???

Oh yeah, in terms of any dynamic writing duo like Lennon/McCartney for new wave I don't really consider any, and I don't own any Beatles songs or LPs, et al.

I'd put the Pet Shop Boys as my second if it was available. Smiths got my poll choice however.

Clash by default. Otherwise it would have been Debbie Harry/Chris Stein.

I muttered "Difford and Tilbrook" to myself before I opened this thread.

Strummer/Jones would be #1a for me.

Of course, neither duo really wrote music that was truly "new wave"...

Ill go for the Smiths but i was hoping there is Orzabal, Smith tandem on the list. [:D][:D]

The best of them all would be Lennon - McCartney. But they're not NW. [:D]

Morrissey/ Marr... I wish they both could leave their personal problems aside and get together again.
But that's not gonna happen it seems.

Had to go with the Clash braintrust (though Difford/Tilbrook was tempting--Jools Holland turns 49 tomorrow as an aside for the Squeeze fans).
While I like the Smiths, and their songwriting was remarkable on gems like This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now and The Headmaster Ritual, I question the genius behind such uplifting spirituals as There Is A Light and Girlfriend In A Coma.
I can't help thinking that if I would just hit myself in the thumb over and over and over again with a hammer that I, too, could find some of that same inspiration!

I think Orzabal and Smith of Tears for Fear are better than the choices and let's not forget the Stein/Harry combo who wrote more hits than a lot of other bands combined.

I could be wrong, but I believe Orzabal wrote more than a majority of their songs, without Curt Smith's (at least credited) input.

With regards to Blondie, a lot of their material was written solo or in collaboration with other members Jimmy Destri (Picture This, Atomic), Nigel Harrison (One Way Or Another, Union City Blue) and Gary Valentine (X Offender, I'm Always Touched By Your Presence Dear) in addition to cover songs like Tide Is High & Hanging On The Telephone.
