Strictly New Wave? I'd say Depeche Mode. Followed closely by Duran Duran.
My favorite? a-ha. (They veered away from New Wave by their fourth album.)

Hmm
I am just thinking of who was 'Big' in my part of the world at that time, rather than suggesting my personal fave. Its important to note that Big NW acts Down Under may indeed differ to elsewhere. For example.. The Cars, though having some charting tracks were never really massive down here, yet I have learnt through NWO that the Cars were indeed massive and important in the US.
Any one of:
Duran Duran
Spandau Ballet (its sad but true!! [:D])
INXS
Adam and the Ants
In light of the above not really adhering to the definitive nature of this Topic, then; If I am voting as per my personal perspectives, then I would single out Duran Duran, period.

04) Simple Minds (up until 1984)
05) Cocteau Twins
06) Yazoo ('Yaz' for the Usa)
07) Wolfgang Press

But this is from my 'European perspective' ... as most people on this forum approach it from a more 'Usa perspective' i guess.

The Wild Swans is considered New Wave in our country. Consider these:
Paul Simpson is formerly of Care along with Ian Broudie who is associated with Big In Japan, Echo And The Bunnymen, Icicle Works and now, with The Lightning Seeds. He's also in Wild Swans second album Space Flower.
Former Lotus Eaters Kelly (or is it Coyle?) played bass in the Wild Swans 1st album.
Well, i guess some New WAve bands here are not New Wave in other countries. [;)][:D]

Sometimes it can be confusing?> Lightning seeds were Brit-pop, that pave away to Oasis, blur and so on.. I thought Van halen was New wave???
