In the wake of '77 they seemed to sprout up from out of nowhere. Some were old biker dives, some were converted discoteques, pool halls, basements & restaurants. CBGB's, The Masque, The Ratskeller, The Cuckoo's Nest, the list goes on. Many of them are long gone now, the stuff of memory & legend. Describe your favorite bygone venue and your experiences there...

Great thread, SuNomi. I'd like to put Manchester's Hacienda on the list. Sadly I never got to go.

Sticking to the 'close to home' venue scene, I must cite <a href="http://www.newsday.com/about/ny-iholi022305story,0,2737436.htmlstory" target="blank">The Malibu of Lido Beach</a>
This fabulous club hosted a plethora of Rock & NW bands from 1979 to 1996

1 huge dance floor, 2 bars (plus the separate 'Piano Lounge'-disco) and plenty of carpeted sit down spots and couches. Take in all this under the haze of black lit neon tropical motif images and tacky plastic tropical palm fronds... Priceless.

First Avenue here in Minneapolis is probably the only surviving club from the "golden age". Now that CBGBs is done, The Rat in Boston, etc First Ave still limps along. They actually closed for a few months last year due to management upheavals, but they still carry on.

I went in 1997...technically it was The Hacienda II (same building etc...) peter saville designed interior of course....rainy Tuesday night in Manchester..about 25 people there all night...very large place...not the most exciting place Ive ever been to, but definitely it was my version of Mecca....I believe they closed forever about 3-6 months later....glad I went....also visited (the outside of)The Salford Lads club (made famous by The Smiths) that same Manchester visit.....

on the topic, im voting for Al's Bar in downtown L.A. a venue for LAs early 80s punk scene...never have I been in such a craphole ...but it was great...dont think its there anymore

Spit
Spize
Reds / La Cage

But best club in the New York area was:

DANCETERIA

Damn, that club was great. Fantastic bands, great music on every floor, and they had a rule now and then where you had to enter the place with a girl. That was a great idea -- you'd be asking girls on the street to go in with you and before you even were in the club, you'd already picked someone up!

Absolutely, probably my favorite place ever. Even more wonderful for being (unofficially) all-ages. Very few shows were 21+, and all others were 18+ but that was never enforced as far I knew. I wasn't trying to drink, so they let me be.

I hear a lot about Hacienda which showcases such great bands like The Wake.

From our country, a small joint in Manila called Mayrics is the venue where most of our local bands started.

Malibu was great. Phenomenal shows. Everyone who had ever been here could list a number of shows they saw. Among the ones I was fortunate enough to catch here were The Vapors, The Ramones, Classix Nouveau, Billy Idol and Lene Lovich

Some of the other great Long Island clubs were Paris, Thrush, Legs and 007. Subway, though short-lived, was a great club in Queens. Aside from Danceteria and CBGB's, The Ritz and The Peppermint Lounge were great in NYC. The Ritz had a good band (and a higher cover) almost every night. Because everything in the Ritz was wooden, it seemed like it could all go up in flames with one misplaced match!

I am sad that I didn't live in NYC during the golden age of rock clubs. But I've heard stories. I'd add to the list: Max's Kansas City, Hurrah, Trax, Tier 3, and the Mudd Club. It's amazing how much incredible music was percolating through those place in the late 70's and 80's.

The only ones I've been to personally are CBGB's and Irving Plaza.
