I'm not an expert, but I've read somewhere who Nigel was or what this name meant in the song.

Maybe in the book of the "Coat of many cupboards" box set????

I'll take a look.

I always thought that Nigel was a random name and that it was the story of a child whose life was overly controlled and planned by his parents.
I know that Andy Partridge had some medical issues as a child and was medicated (I think he was on valium). Perhaps this was a view of Andy's childhood from his perspective?
