I get the sense that New Wave music, on the whole, is the most romantic musical genre known to man (soulful Marvin Gaye and the like notwithstanding).
But most, if not all, of the New Wave songs have a grain of cynicism or hopelessness to them. No New Wave song is truly in love -- they are most likely bitter in some respect, if you get my meaning.
The musical side of New Wave is lush and full of vibrant emotion, which only adds to that sentiment of why-can't-you-love-me-like-I-love-you so prevalent in New Wave.
I mean, "New Romantic"? Dude!
All I'm saying is that a lot of these songs romanticize life, but, for some reason, life chose not to romanticize the narrator, and they're all the worse for it.
Thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Going to listen to "Doot Doot" now?
