It's Talk Talk day for me today

Being a total music nerd, I have a tendency to do music nerd-like things. One of them is listening to [i]The Colour Of Spring[/i] by Talk Talk every year on this day since they have a song called "April 5th" on the album. It's just an OK song, but it's a great album, so why pass up a good opportunity to listen to it? I've done this practically every year since its release, although I know I've missed a few.

Hell, I like this album so much, I own two copies. As I've mentioned in other threads, I have the hybrid SACD that came out a few years ago. However, I bought all of the remasters in 1999, and when you line them up on the shelf, they spell out "Talk Talk" on the spines. So, because I am, as explained above, a music nerd, I can't get rid of the 1999 reissue because it would screw up the consistency on my CD rack.

Great band. The thing that always struck me about them was their passion. The remake of "It's My Life" by Gwen Stefani was such a travesty. It was completely passionless and that made the remake a flop. This song is all about passion.

When I first heard the No Doubt version, I was like "cool, someone's finally paying tribute to one of the greatest New Wave bands ever". After a few listens, I agree with Club80 and thought their version lacked the emotion that Mark Hollis and gang can bring to a song. This is what set a lot of the bands from the 80's apart from the popular acts of today. You can hear musicianship in the bands of the 80's, even in the ones that weren't that great.

The Gwen Stefani cover is an abomination. About a month ago, I heard a cover of her cover at a bar. It was absolutely awful. [xx(]

I actually love April 5th, and like you, every year I think of it, and play it (if possible). Then again, I love all of The Colour Of Spring, so...

The Party's Over (and corresponding B Sides) is perfection (save Mirror Man, which I don't care for). Beyond that, they were a singles band for me. A lot of the mid-tempo songs that started with the second album onward didn't do much for me, so I own the first album and the odd compilation.

Surly that is really weird...I happened to pull out The Colour of Spring and play it for a couple of days straight this week, including on April 5th! I hadn't played it in about three years; I guess it was just meant to be. Oh yeah, that lead to my having a Talk Talk week as well. I've been listening to A-sides B-sides double cd from 1998, and am looking forward to playing the immport Live 1986 cd that came out a few years back. It is a legitimate release, and very well recorded.

The amazing thing is how well they pulled off the tunes live, with even more of the passion. I highly recommend the live cd to anyone who can track it down.

Wow, I'm not the only one who listens to the Colour of Spring every year in April. I usually keep it on my turntable for awhile in early April and for the last 5 or 6 years, listen to "April 5th" every April 5th - except this year I forgot. [:0]

Talk Talk is highly underrated.

On that note, Gwen Stefani should be shot and dragged out onto the street.
