Can U Imagine a Certain Band w/ a Different Lead?

Postby guyinsf » Fri Apr 06, 2007 7:57 pm

There are so many great bands with lead singers that have such a strong prescence that you just can't imagine in a million years anyone else taking their place. Let's imagine a certain band makes a comeback and their lead singer is either dead or not participating and the idea of them subsituting the lead singer is completely crazy to the point that you want to boycott their CD or tour, which bands would you feel that way about?

Duran Duran just would NOT be the same band without SLB; I wouldn't go or listen to them, yech!

Good call on the Cars....I cannot imagine them without Ric.

Brings up a point... Did anyone see The "New" Cars, with Todd Rudgren as lead singer?

I know wha'cha mean KYYX4ever if DD was sans Simon... yech for sure, it's that quality and/or signature of his voice, just like with The Cars; not only is Ric's voice gone, but so is Ben Orr's (RIP)!

Blondie would be utterly pointless without Debbie.

I hate Queen, but I can,t imagine what true fans are thinking with Paul Rodgers replacing Freddie Mercury on vocals.

I'd never listen to The Cure again without Robert Smith. Or U2 without Bono.

Agree with KYYX about Duran Duran, also.

Well...we have heard the Cars without Ric Ocasek. Benjamin Orr sang a fair number of their songs.

Tears For Fears without Roland or Curt is pointless (another band whose passion came through on every song, making any thought of a cover doomed for failure).

The Psychedelic Furs without Richard Butler would never work.

I think that there are loads of bands that this applies to. For me, the integrity of the original band is one of the most important factors in the enjoyment I get from their music. As the original post said, many bands would simply not be 'right' if they lost their original vocalist. In some cases there are other band members that are almost as important but I think the vocalist is the key.

Some immediate examples for me:

Japan without David Sylvian
Simple Minds without Jim Kerr
Duran Duran without Simon Le Bon
Depeche Mode without Dave Gahan
Flock of Seagulls without Mike Score

However, I can think of two examples who pulled off the trick of changing their vocalist and keeping their integrity:

Ultravox (damned good with either John Foxx or Midge Ure to be fair)
Kajagoogoo (equally good with Limahl or Nick Beggs)
Kusee Pee
Running Up That Hill

Hi BMG. It was played on our local New Wave station before. I remember someone here mentioned the song. I think it was "The Best Cure Song Game" thread somewhere here. Maybe Glokstadt.

Someone here who knew more about this song please give some details here. Thanks.

But im certainly sure that the Cure song harold and Joe was not sung by Robert Smith. [:)]
