the underdog bands

People (myself included) seem quick to bash the bands that made it big (U2, The Police, REM, etc.). Disliking the bands that went onto make music for the masses, and championing the ones that didn't. What bands do you think had the right stuff and thought would break it (really) big.
"The Long Ryders" come to mind.

Classix Nouveaux should have been big in the U.S. OF A. I always thought they had a great sound.

How do you measure success? Platinum albums? Recognition? There were so many bands that didn't sell a lot of records in the U.S. but should have.

Kate Bush and XTC were probably far too "British" to make it as big here . I think that's a shame because Their music is quite unique.

That tune you had on your site recently-New York City by the Demics was pretty awesome. Just from the sound of that one song I would say they had "the right stuff".

The Jam! I mean they were as big as the Police in the UK why not US?
I am very surprised that The Alarm were not bigger than they were.

The Jam definitely should have been much bigger in th US.
Also:
XTC - Maybe way to Anglo for American consumption.
Boomtown Rats - Were every bit as good as their "alternative" rock-God peers.
Dickies - They should have been REALLY big.
