Although New Wave is (rightly) known for its frontier breaking use of synthesizers and tape loops/samples a lot of the guitarists associated with this genre contributed significant "sounds" that I think were every bit as innovative. Such as:
Stuart Adamson's use of the e-bow and achieving the so-called "bagpipe" sound
Reg Smithies's and Dave Fielding's use of duel guitar melodies with heavy chorus and delay for a sweeping, beautifiul sound
The Edge's pioneering use of harmonics
Jamie West-Oram's use of heavy compression combined with funk guitar licks for a filling, rhythmic sound
Will Sergeant's crisp minimalism
and a whole slew of virtuoso guitarists (Andy Summers, Bill Nelson, Adrian Belew, etc, etc) who really opened the floodgates for new "sounds"
What guitar sounds strike you as innovative or progressive and why?
