In the 80's Vinyl was king (for the most part) and the 12" was an art form of it's own. They usually had non album tracks (B sides)that provided more insight into our favorite bands than any interview could, as usually these were tracks the artists picked out themselves. The extended mix provided more of what you loved in a song (at the same time some extended mixes never seemed to end!)..The criterea is inclusive of A and B side worth. Ok, this time Im going to be a little less strict I want 20...please number them if you can 20 to 1...I am looking forward to your responses: here are mine:::

20. The The: "Uncertain Smile" 12" (epic mix, really intersting B side)
19. China Crisis: "Working with Fire and Steel "12"(beautiful B sides)
18.The Smiths "William It was Really nothing"12" (B side provided us with "How Soon is Now")
17. Heaven 17 "Crushed By the Wheels of Industry"12"
16. Depeche Mode: "New Life" 12" (B side 'Shout' - great compliment to A side)
15. Killing Joke "Kings and Queens" 12"
14. OMD "Telegraph" (canadian 12" b/w "Genetic Engineering) Ext. Mixes
13. Polecats "Make a circuit with me" 12"(UK ext remix)
12. Tears For Fears "Change"12" 2 diff versions than LP and extra track
11. Most Smiths/Morrissey 12" always included different versions on B sides
10. Depeche Mode "The Meaning Of Love"12"
9.Japan "Nightporter"Japanese 12" (although I dont own this yet, I know all the tracks, therefore it ranks as an invisible favorite)
8.Duran Duran Tie tie Duran Duran: "Girls On Film 12"UK + "Planet earth" 12"
7. Tones On Tail : "Lions/Go" 12"
6. The Jam "bitterest Pill"12"
5.The Bubblemen: " are Coming 12" rare classic
4. Adam and The Ants " Stand & Deliver" awesome B side
3. Modern English "Melt with You" (mainly for B sides) Uk version even better
2. shriekback:"My Spine is the baseline" 12"--all-flawless tracks
1. David Sylvian/R. Sakamoto : Bamboo houses/music 12" if you know, no need to say much about this. If you don't , your local record store is just a stones throw away.

Hate to let you down but I found that 98% of the time I thought "extended mixes" ruined the songs. I am sure there are exceptions but they escape me right now. ...and I know I am probably in the minority on this.

If you love a song there's nothing wrong with a couple more minutes of it.

While there are some truly great 12" mixes, many were not particularly good and some were down right bad.

Methinks you missed the point of the thread, not suposed to be a critique of the 12" in general. Just spotlighting the positive ones in your life. It also helps if you actually collect vinyl. Ive found tons of great songs from bands that I love that are n

I can understand the arguments, but I think I'm with Marque on this one.... I always enjoy hearing 12" mixes. Some are crummy - of course - but maybe that just proves out the strength of the original.
