I seem to have a penchant for accumulating records by talented bands who put out numerous records over their careers, but none of them amounted to an artistic breakthrough. It's as though their sound is an acquired taste, and either you "get it" or you don't.
I'm talking about bands like The Fall, who have something like 20 records and nearly all of them are interesting, but none of them are quite worthy of being called a standout. On the poppier side, the ozzie cult-band Go Betweens might qualify. Loved 'em, and all of their records are quite special, but sadly none of them were, by themselves, noteworthy to the point of "you gotta hear this!"
Other artists in the Great Talent, Prolific Under-achievement category: Frank Zappa, Sun Ra, Captain Beefheart, and others. I'm sure the 1980's has plenty of these bands too-- where you liked them enough to buy a bunch of their records, but any random pick of their catalog is as good as another.
Got any nominees for this category?
