I finally finished setting up the "lab" in the basement for making MP3's of my out-of-print Lps, 12", and 45s. I have my turntable sitting on a mat on a perfectly level piece of 3/4" plywood, which rests on 2 65-pound sawhorses. My PC is on a separate table, so no vibration is transfered to the turntable. The RCA's from the turntable go to a preamp, which in turn goes to a soundcard with RCA inputs. The recordings are quite good so far. Here's what I started with today:

Poly Styrene (ex-X-Ray Spex)-Trick of the Witch
Adult Net-Incense and Peppermints
Screaming for Emily (A New Bruns NJ band that sounds just like Gene Loves Jezebel)-The Love
Bangles-Bangles EP (Their first 5-song EP, now out of print)
Peter Murphy-A Strange Kind of Love (Version 2)-It's a B-side DANCE version of that song! can you believe it?

Anyway, it's a pain, but it's a blast seeing these songs on MP3 form on my PC's hard drive. I've only ever done a few before, but I had to lug a turntable upstairs, sit it precariously on a computer desk, and take my chances. Now, I can do this on a much more wholesale level.

I'm going to MP3-ify My early Pretty Poison catalogue, all of my out of print Cure and New Order singles, and some of my rare 12"s tomorrow.

Requests, anyone?

Wow, judging by your 8-disc offering in the other thread, I'm totally blown away. The only problem might be finding someone with decent enough value to trade back - you've got such an impressiv elist.

Has anybody who uses a Mac – particularly an IBook – tried turning their cassettes and CDs into MP3s? I'd like to hear how it's done. And maybe someday, I'll post my killer mix of "Pride (In the Name of Love)" that Bono particularly liked…

PLEASE don not record anything less than a bit rate of 192! record everything at as high of a rate possible, otherwise you will regret it and have to re-record everything. might want to invest in some low end editing software to clean up the sound a bit.

I think we're mixing two different terms, the sampling rate and the encoding bit rate. The former are typically 44.1, 48, 92, and 192kHz. The latter are typically 128, 160, 192, and variable kilobits per second (kbps) rate typically associated with mp3s v
