Someone told me that, when disco was officially 'dead', the Village People tried to stay relevant by recording a new wave album.

Is this true and has anyone ever heard it?
Was it as horrible as I imagine it would have been?

I have never heard the record but yes --its true...the cover looked not dissimilar to Adam and the Ants Prince charming (back cover)....I bet you there is a gem on there if they had even a semi competent producer....

Yes, it's true, never heard the LP though... It's a GR/Gleason fave.

You can go to allmusic & hear samples. It's typical Village People music, they just had different costumes. It's very, very, very bad - even for a group who made their living on ultra-campy crapola.

you must check out "Food Fight" from the album Renaissance...it is hilarious!

"5 O'Clock in the Morning" is probably my favorite song of theirs. The rest is a losing mix of inoffensive filler and offensive noise pollution. Side 2 is pretty much unlistenable.

The album actually has (at least) two covers. The original U.S. vinyl artwork was decidedly new-wave looking. The other one (which I think is what was used for the CD), not so much.

FYI, only some of the tracks actually pass muster as new wave. "5 O'Clock" being one of them.

No, but they did have a song in the early eighties called "Misled" which was a nice fusion of their R&B sound and a heavy guitar riff. [;)]

i use to see that album all the time at record shows in the dollar bins i always wondered if it would be any good.
i crack up every time i see that cover because the guy on the right side just makes me think of misfits era danzig.

Disco gone New Wave??? New Wave bands did Disco too.
Erasure (take a chance on me) and Communards (never say goodbye)thingie's.

I've got the album and apart from 'Do You Wanna Stay The Night', '5 O'Clock in the Morning' and 'Food Fight' the rest of the album is completely worthless. The follow up, 'Fox on the Box' is much better and 'Play Bach' is a great track. The slow version of 'Save Me' with Alexander O' Briley on lead vocals is decent too.
