Linder/Ludus
Posted: Sun Aug 26, 2007 12:03 pmI was doing the art crawl this afternoon in Long Island City, when, after the Center For the Holographic Arts (http://www.holocenter.org/news.html), and before the Fisher Landau Center For Art (www.flcart.org) I went to the always interesting PS1 (http://www.ps1.org/)
At PS1 I was looking forward to an exhibit by an artist that painted what looked to me like a bunch of M and Ms. However I stumbled unexpectedly upon an exhibit of the work of Linder, a graphic artist/musician/performance artist from Manchester that was very involved in the Manchester post-punk scene.
She designed a number of flyers for some New Hormones and Factory acts (Buzzcocks, Magazine, Joy Division) and actually lived with Howard Devoto.
She had a post-punk/jazz band with Ian Devine called Ludus, which put on a memorable show at The Hacienda in 1982, where Linder wore meat and a black dildo. A 38 minute film of this performance plays constantly in the PS1 exhibition. 3 Ludus cds were released by LTM 5 years ago (of course I bought them all from the gift shop).
The title of the first Buzzcocks lp, Another Music In A Different Kitchen was based upon one of Linder’s montages. The picture sleeve for Orgasm Addict was designed by Linder, as was the album cover of Magazine’s Real Life.
