I noticed a lot of members seem to have a lot of extended versions or remixed versions of popular songs.

I have begun trying to add some of these to my collection, but it seems like every 80's song has about twenty different remixes available. It's hard to know what to seek out and what to pass on. Some extended mixes are simply the same song with a longer intro or an added instrumental solo.

What are some popular songs that have remixes available that you like more than the original? If it is from a particular remix cd that is available, please name the cd so I can seek it out. If it is unavailable for purchase, and you have the mp3, perhaps you can kindly post a link to the download.

I have a few that I like that I will upload and post.

I think that beauty is in the ear of the beholder so everyone's likes will be different. For me, the first 12 inch that comes to mind as an improvement over the album cut is "Uncertain Smile" by The The. I like Jools Holland's piano on the album, but prefer the piano-less version that the 12 inch offers

Totally unoriginal but still gotta give props to my alltime favorite, B-Movie's "Nowhere Girl". I guess it's not a remix quite so much as an extended.

Elsewhere, I really like the coarser, more elemental sound of the Cure's original "Boys Don't Cry" 12". I also dig the extended drum roll of the "In Between Days" 12".

Dolby's "One of Our Submarines" off the Blinded Me With Science 12" is also very good...mostly because there's just more of a great song to like.

I never would have thought the Bunnymen could improve "The Killing Moon", one of new wave's signature songs IMHO, but that "All Night Version" really does...just darker and richer.

Surprisingly, the band with probably the most 12" remixes, New Order, really has none that I'd prefer over the original. The Pink Noise Morel Mix of "True Faith" might come the closest.

Big Country cranked out some great remixes that really improved upon some already good songs. "Wonderland" comes to mind, along with most of their remixes between '83 and '86. Each 12" was reissued as part of a 4-volume set of cd singles several years ago, which I still occassionally see in the import bins.

Same for Simple Minds, except their 5-volume cd single set has been out of print for many years.

Ultavox has a good "Extended Mixes" compilation out. It's an import, but budget priced. Same with Talk Talk (A-sides, B-sides double cd).

The extended version of "Nowhere Girl" by B-Movie. I like the added intro with the piano mixed with laughs. I know it is on the Hardest Hits vol. 1 CD (LE, OOP), not sure if it has appeared elsewhere.

I prefer "March Of The Swivelheads" to "Rotating Heads". I enjoy the extended version of "Jeanette" (just some added instr. solo) on the flipside of the 12" single, as well. Glad I picked this one up in L.A. back in '83 [:)].

The 12 inch of Homosapien also comes to mind. Good dub extension.

I love the original version of Dazzle by Siouxsie & the Banshees, but the Glamour mix is my favorite version - it's so epic, bombastic and dark. It's what a remix should be.

I also like Blondie's Live it Up, it's got a very long extended instrumental break for the last couple of minutes. Not one of their more popular songs, but whoever remixed it did a good job.

I've mentioned the Motels Shame before, but again - great extended mix that just adds to & enhances the song instead of totally reworking it.

Heaven 17's extended instrumental of Let Me Go is awesome too.

A little off topic, but I just thought of the worst remix ever.

Has anyone ever heard "Dance Hall Days Revisited"?

It sounds like Wang Chung is mixed with the guys who did Holiday Rap and it sounds like it may have been produced by the same guy who produced New Kids on the Block. Putrid.[xx(]

A couple spring to mind:

INXS in general had some great remixes, but their remix of Burn for you was their best, IMO

The remix of the Damned's Alone Again or

On the whole ABC's remixes were always good, I loved the Wall St mix of Millionaire

The Remix of Grace Jones, Slave to the Rhythm is an improvement on the original

The Remix of Birds Fly by the Icicle Works

The Remix of Alphaville's Dance with me

The Remix of Never again (The Dancer) by AFOS

and I'll echo the sentiment above about Big Country. Their collection of remixes in on CD and is quite good

I almost mentioned that! But then decided I just couldn't do without the orchestral intro/outro.

another B-Movie- Nowhere Girl vote here.

My COMPLETE and FAR & AWAY fave is the New York mix of Psychedelic Furs - "Hearbeat". Such an awesome song! Far better than the original.

Duran Duran's early material had fantastic 12" (called "night" mixes) that were amazing. "Planet Earth", "Girls on Film", "New Religion", & "My Own Way" come to mind. They actually would go into the studio and totally remix the song.

As for new DD, their most recent-charting song, "Sunrise" had a remix by Jason Nevins that was far superior to the CD version, IMO.

I like Lords of the New Church "Dance With Me" 12" better, too.

Generally, I liked 12"s a LOT, and found them to be a lovely, longer version of a song that I already liked. Some sounded quite a bit different, and others seemed to merely repeat a riff or note over & over & over again. Always fun to seek out and give a listen.

I also love the Mother's Talk (long version) and The Beat Of The Drum from the Mother's Talk EP. I don't know if they are available commercially but I would love to get a copy if they aren't and someone has them (pm me if need be).

I'd have to say the 12" mixes of both "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "The Perfect Kiss" by New Order.

Also, the extended version of "Don't Talk To Me About Love" that was released as a 12" in the US with the extended guitar part at the end. Lovely.

Not sure of the names of these mixes as all of my stuff is in storage right now, but the New Order mixes are easy to find.

Oh, and I used the 12" mix of "Deeper And Deeper" by The Fixx on both the [i]Ultimate Collection[/i] and the [i]Reach The Beach[/i] reissue as it blows away the shorter version on the [i]Streets Of Fire[/i] soundtrack. They even issued the 12" version as the b-side of the 45 of "Are We Ourselves" instead of the edit.
