I have no Japan CDs. If I were to get two, what would be your first and second recommendation?

It depends.....do you want the sophisticated slick sound (late period) or the more aggressive sound (early period)? They're both good by the way.

Slick: Go with schwenko

Aggressive: Go with eight6

I don't know about Quiet Life being part of the aggressive sound, I think of it as the turning point in their music style from the raw aggressive sound to the more refined sound of their later output.

I thought those two best illustrate the musical range offered by the group.

My bad.....I was thinking about Adolescent Sex....well, I personally wasn't thinking about Adolescent Sex. I was thinking about the LP Adolescent Sex....you know what I mean.

I'd go with their "best of" that was released in the UK and Canada last year:

It's a pretty good overview.

And of course, [i]Tin Drum[/i] is essential.

If you're really into New Romantic music, then get [i]Quiet Life[/i] and [i]Gentlemen Take Polaroids[/i]. If you like minimal/experimental and overall strange World music, then get [i]Tin Drum[/i]. If you like a harsher Glam Rock kinda sound, then get [i]Adolescent Sex[/i] and [i]Obscure Alternatives[/i]. It's really hard to pin point any one album if you wanna get into Japan. You can always buy their compilations: [i]Assemblage[/i] to get a feel for the earlier stuff and [i]Exorcising Ghosts[/i] to hear their more popular New Romantic sound.

I wouldn't get the compilation [i]The Best Of Japan[/i] only. I'd buy that AND [i]Assemblage[/i]. A lot of the Japan compilations out there focus on their output [b]after[/b] [i]Obscure Alternatives[/i]. You also need to hear how much different they sounded before they became the sons of pioneers[8D]

Well, it was hard to decide. So I got only one, leaving more to get in the future. Instead I got a couple of other CDs I should have gotten long ago...

I might have gone for Quiet Life except for the fact it's listed for three dollars more than Gentlemen.
