New Wave Outpost Forum

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed in the past. I couldn't really do a search with the words "new wave" in it. A billion threads would have come up.

Anyway, what are some examples of non-new wave acts trying their hand at a new wave song or an entire new wave album?

One album that comes to my mind is:

Thanks, bruiser. You're right, it's a great read.

What struck me is that the thread was started in 2004, and the very same debates were taking place as you can see on any given day now.
People arguing about what is and isn't new wave, and worse yet, people insulting others about their musical likes and dislikes. It's actually quite funny.

Anyway, one album I didn't notice from the old thread that I feel has quite a few new wavish songs on it is Road To Utopia by Todd Rundgren and Utopia. "Set Me Free" and "You Make Me Crazy" are two examples of Rundgren going very new wave for that album.

"Freeze Frame" and "L" by Godley Creme. It's funny, I always considered them new wave until someone here (I forget who) set me straight.

"An Englishman in New York" is a great new wave tune.

Starship--"We Built This City".

Manfred Mann did a song called "Lies(All Through The 80's)" which has a very new wave feel to it.

I think their song "The Runner" kind of has a slight NW feel to it.

Robert Palmer with "Looking For Clues". Almost sounded like it could have come out of the Stiff Records stable

that's a new-wavey album actually. he's helped on it by chris frantz and gary numan!

his next album, "pride" is great. it's all quirky rhythms and (then) cutting edge technology. lots of great synth playing, and some pretty ambitious mixing and songwriting. i love that album. he flirts with technofunk here, and this comes to fruition on "riptide."

I'll have to pick it up and listen. While a lot of artists change styles, most aren't actually successful doing it. Glad to hear that he was an exception.

The good news is that it shares some opinion on his qualifications for New Wave legitamacy. The bad news is that Georgie was involved in the post. Shudder....the memory of it haunts me like it was yesterday.
