New Wave Outpost Forum

To me, new wave was at it's strongest between '82 and '86. However, there were still the occasional great new wave album that surfaced well into the late eighties and beyond.

What is the last great new wave album, in your opinion?

I personally think the peak was 1981-1982. The last great New Wave album, to me, was Violator by Depeche Mode

I'd say the peak was 1979-83 for new wave. Anyway to answer the question, the bes recent new wave albums (although both probably qualify more as power pop)are 1998's "Zoom" by the Knack and "Perfect World Radio" in 2003 by the Hawks.
"Zoom" or "Re-Zoom" as it was titled when re-released in '03 harkens back to the Knack's original tight and solid '60s sounds. Well worth looking for and adding to your collection.
"PWR" is a collection of Hawks songs that didn't make the cut on their two albums, but yet you'd never know it was a bunch of outtakes. A superb sound and plenty of variety from pop ballads to true new wave rockers.

1986 "Friends" The Boshoi. "Away" being the last classic new wave tune. Whoops, maybe it's "Start Stop" by Modern English...."Ink and Paper" is also a classic new wave tune. Both tunes could have come from the early 80's. Gots classic written all over them.

Keep in mind that these are my personal opinions and no alternative bands were harmed when I formed this opinion. Thank you.

I remember hearing "The Promise" in 1988 and being totally psyched because new wave seemed to be dying out a bit and this song had a very-1984ish sound to it.
Unfortunately, the When In Rome album had little else on it that was nearly as good nor nearly as new wave. [:(]

"The Raw & The Cooked"- Fine Young Cannibals was one of the better #1 albums from the last year (1989) of the New Wave decade. Partly because other #1 albums that year included releases from Debbie Gibson, Richard Marx, New Kids on the Block, Milli Vanilli and Paula Adbul.

Other notable "New Wave" releases from 1989: "Cosmic Thing"- B-52s, "Technique"- New Order, "Disintegration"- The Cure, "Sonic Temple"- The Cult, "Don't Tell A Soul"- Replacements.

Start Stop was a favourite of mine from 1986...I used to believe I was the only person who bought it though!

The Last Great New Wave Album? Depeche Mode's Violator.

Book Of Love ~ Book Of Love 1986.

For me it was The Lighting Seeds, the CD with all the hits songs on it... like Life of Riley, et al. (Just can't remember name of album, something with a Coo Koo in it?)
