Does anyone else recall that most of your new wave friends were also big Doors fans back in the day?

Also, weren't there a lot of new wave Doors covers? I can only think of a few right now like EATBM's "People Are Strange". McCulloch also had a proclivity to cover Doors songs in concert, like "Roadhouse Blues". X does a fantastic "Soul Kitchen". Any others you recollect?

I remember seeing EATBM do a cover of Soul Kitchen, in probably '86. McCulloch was putting on the Morrison affectations throughout the show. I was a big Doors fan at the time, though I view them a lot differently now then I did then. But it was very cool at the time.

X's version of Soul Kitchen is a classic.

It's interesting the way that some of the Doors' tunes are flowing down through the generations. For example, there are a bunch of "Peace Frog" mashups floating around out there, some of which are quite good.

The Cure also did a cover of Hello I Love You.

Didn't The Mission do a cover of Love Me Two Times?

Funny, I was just listening to that earlier. Years ago, I did freelance work for a company that did music memorabilia. I got a black denim jacket from them with a huge Doors silkscreen on the back. It's one of the few articles of clothing I saved from the eighties. When Oliver Stone did that docudrama, I was all over it. I remember waiting on line for a midnight screening, the first public one in NYC. That must have been the Ziegfeld.

As a big Doors fan myself, I was always looking out for connections between them and anything New Wave.

The Doors - EATBM connection goes a bit deeper than some may realize. Ray Manzarek was a defacto member of the band for a time - actually playing keyboards on their self-titled 1987 release.

And, of course, he produced for X.

I always loved the Ray Manzarek connection with EATBM and X even more so because he seems so sixties hippy dippy in interviews. He's the last guy I would've expecxted to be producing a punk band.

Maybe part of the new wave connection is the fact that he wasn't afraid to use unique keyboard sounds on Doors tunes, much the same way many new wave bands used synths to add quirkiness to the tunes of that era.

Either way, he has great taste!

My theory on the Doors and new wave....

It's all in the name. In the early new wave days, so many of the bands had names like "THE Vapors", "THE Psychadelic Furs", THE Jam, THE Clash etc etc etc...

I always saw it as reaction against the mainstream-AOR band names of the day, which were generally one word: Journey, Kansas, Foreigner, Boston, etc etc....

This theory may sound crazy, but as a naive 13-yr-old, I (misguidedly) perceived a connection between all these current bands and "THE Doors", "THE Who", "THE Kinks", etc etc.

So, due only to the names, I learned about and respected these artists like the Doors. Now, other than cover-versions, and the connection of the 'new psycedelia' bands (ala Echo, Teardrop Explodes)I think there was not alot of similarites between the Doors music and early new-wave. Maybe more-so in post-punk.

Maybe its sadly because of the singers' fates, but Joy Division and the Doors worked in the same territory (in my mind anyway).

By the way, Trouser Press did a cover story on the Doors (maybe '80,'81), saying "WHY NOW?" - - (ie why the fascination with them now). I've got the mag in the attic somewhere - maybe I'll dig it out.

Hell yeah. You might as well throw Kurt Cobain in there too. Three of the most imaginative rock bands in the history of music IMHO. Some of the most poetic lyrics ever as well, that really challenged listeners.

Very interesting.. I was not aware of the Ray Manzarek connection to EATB.

To me, some of the Doors songs (I Looked At You in particular) almost seem like a blueprint for some NW songs. The keyboards, bass, & beat would fit nicely in many later NW songs. A far cry from the self indulgent stuff that followed in the 70's.

IMO Soul Kitchen is the best Doors cover by far. However I've gotta give The Weirdos 2nd place for their cover of Break On Through.

I like The Doors too!

Funny, to my mind, there always has been some kind of connection between them and NW, but nothing I could put my finger on. Propensity toward theatricality, perhaps? Imaginative keyboard riffs? Maybe a similar attitude. Hmm.

Ever since I started liking Joy Division, I saw that there was a pretty strong connection between them and The Doors... that led me to liking The Doors (whose songs I knew well for some strange reason but didn't like).
The amount of NW covers of Doors' songs is considerable.
