First Wave (Sirius) vs. Fred (XM)

Has anyone else had a chance to compare the two? It feels like an East Coast West Coast battle of playlists. Having grown up in LA, I prefer XM, as Sirius' First Wave is way too reliant on crossover new wave top 40 hits. I have to admit its a trip hearing Richard Blade, Swedish Egil and Freddy Snakeskin again - but talk about playing it safe.[xx(]

I've never had the opportunity to try Sirius, but I LOVE Fred.

Maybe ignorance is bliss, but based on what you've described, I think not.

no need to compare, they'll be one and the same shortly. It looks like their merger will go through as I thought.

Too bad, especially, if that means only one station will remain as they consoladate, etc., etc.

Hey, Glok! I'm glad we agree!

If... er, when the two stations merge do you think that the FRED-ness of FRED will be lost? I'd hate to see their strong alt playlist weakened by the "crossover. . . top 40" crap. [:(]

That's what will probally happen... just like the Top 2,200 songs tghey counted down on Labor Day weekend was mostly "Top 40-ish" tunes without all the obscure songs mixed in.

Yeah, that was a total disappointment. Instead of picking the BEST 2200 songs they picked the most popular by top 40 standards of the day. Blech. I changed my station over to XMU at about that time.

The top 2044 are supposed to be picked and voted by the listeners (that's at least what we did in 2003-2005--we'd Email a list of 10 songs to them). I haven't recalled them asking for votes the last couple of years, however. Can someone correct me? Part of the problem is that after some idiot broke into my car and ruined the stuff related to the radio (I forgot and left the XM radio in the car), I don't listen to XM when I drive anymore (I plug in my Ipod).

And I hope Fred does not become "Fred Lite"--Lucy is supposed to be the pop/"lite" versions of Fred and Ethel.

I heard FirstWave for 3 hours, and it was just like listening to my IPod. Lots of good obscurities. Heck, they even played Pylon tracks.

I own both XM and Sirius, and while many try to compare the 2, First Wave and Fred are completely different animals.

First Wave plays the greatest hits of New Wave, while Fred plays the history of alternative music. I enjoy each for what they are, but tend to lean more toward First Wave.
