bought at a grocery store in bandera texas, circa 1983, during a particularly dreadful family trip:

side one:
flock of seagulls: "i ran"
kim wilde: "kids in america"
haircut 100: "love plus one"
sparks: "i predict"
thompson twins: "in the the name of love"
graham parker: "you hit the spot"
the waitresses: "i know what boys like"

side two:
the go-go's: "we got the beat"
bow wow wow: "i want candy"
duran duran: "girls on film"
split enz: "i got you"
depeche mode: "dreaming of me"
omd: "joan of arc"
billy idol: "hot in the city"

i was already listening to the go-go's, duran, kim wilde, and the other top 40 hits- but this is the cassette that got me started on depeche mode and thompson twins. DAMN YOU, THE BEAT!

I love "The Beat"! It was a great summertime lp. I also discovered one of my favorite Graham Parker songs on it - "You Hit The Spot".

One of the first NW compilations that I remember seeing. I was so amazed to see Depeche Mode, OMD, The Go-Go's and Duran Duran on a compilation. Times have sure changed. For nostalgic purposes, it would be cool if they release it along with a dvd with all of the respective videos.

wow! great pics- mine got eaten years ago, but i have most of those songs on cd now, i should burn one with the original cover! (i'm sure it's on the internet somewhere)

[/quote]In the Summer of '85 I took a long roadtrip w/ a high school buddy and The Beat was 1 of only 2 cassettes brought along (Berlin/Los Lobos was the other). Still to this day whenever I hear any song from that tape, I think of that great trip.

Awesome. I got "The Beat" for christmas 1982, right after it was released. I also had Rock of the 80s from 2 Christmases before (my mom started getting me every k-tel record that was released in 1979, starting with "High Energy"). There was also a K-tel album called Nu Rock in 81. Crazy thing is, as a kid, I didn't actually realize that a lot of the music I loved in 1979, beginning with Blondie, was "new wave" until several years later when the 80s made it REALLY obvious.
