Oingo fans - Your take on Boingo Alive?

I've been listening to this one lately. If you're an Oingo Boing fan like I am it's an enjoyable enough record, but what was the point of re-recording your greatest hits for a pseudo-live double album? There are a few interesting takes on some favorites like Dead Man's Party, but really there's not a single song there that I'd choose over the earlier version. Has any other band ever done something like this?

Love Boingo here, but this album never hit it for me. These live tracks sounds exactly like the originals. Without the interaction with an audience it sounds like it's really missing something. And Elfman's voice at times sounded like he was trying to keep up with the band. This and '94's Boingo are the two discs I listen the very least. In fact, I think Boingo's only gone around twice in my disc player.

Definitely a weird concept for an album, but I used to play the crap out of it after its release. I think I was burned out on the album versions at the time, so the 'live' versions were a nice change for a while. For the longest time, I preferred the Alive versions of No Spill Blood, Grey Matter, and Dead Man's Party to the originals. Probably don't feel that way anymore. I haven't listened to Alive in a really long time.

I worked at a record store in the Valley at the time--missed out when band members actually came to stores bringing copies of the new CD--was really an interesting publicity stunt. Within a month, the double album had to be seriously marked down.

While two good songs, "The Winning Side" and "Cinderella Undercover" (and I also remember airplay of "Country Sweat") were in heavy rotation on KROQ, the album did not sell well, I think for reasons stated above. And those three (and maybe the "live" version of "No One One Lives Forever") are the only ones I've ever really played throughout the years--I've never played either disc in its entirety.

And as a result it looks like both "Winning Side" and "Cinderella Undercover" have definitely fell through the cracks throughout the years. If there weren't so many used copies, I could see trade requests for those two tracks. [:D]

I have to mention that the rawhide version of the OB classic "Sweat" called "Country Sweat" is worth hearing at least once for the novelty value.

This was my least favorite. I was not a fan of the country-ization of Boingo, though I understood the band's attempt to touch and and experiment with all genres. Brave attampt, but mixed result.
