New Wave Outpost Forum

I'm not really sure if Poi Dog Pondering fall into any New Wave category as is loosely defined yet often debated here but I was wondering what people thought of them. Someone gave me a tape of their first proper album when it came out back in 1985 (actually it was Andy D. who used to play in the Toronto indie band Mermaid Cafe - one of the other 2 members who was Merril Nisker aka Peaches).
I loved the eclectic nature and upbeat nature of the album and have been a fan ever since.
The next record was Wishing On A Mountain, followed by Volo Volo and Pomegranate.
More recently they have gone a bit more electronic from what I've heard, although I don't have anything after Pomegranate.

Anyone else like this band or know about their post Pomegranate material?

LOL! I was just listening to "Living With The Dreaming Body" the other day. Now that Ethel Merman's disco lp has been deemed NW worthy, I'd say PDP is safely in the NW realm.[}:)]

I love those guys. I interviewed Susan before a show at Maxwell's in the winter (1990), and that summer went to see them in Central Park, and Susan remembered our names and hugged us. When I first met Frank, he was more interested in my life than talking about his music. What a great (and down to earth) band!

In the mid-90's, I heard they relocated to Chicago, and were getting airplay on WXRT. I went there on a business trip, and tuned in WXRT in the rent a car just in time to hear Frank's voice and the debut of "Catacombs."

I enjoyed the (more R&B) stuff they went on to do, and their show at Irving Plaza in the late 90's was amazing. I hope there's more to come!

I just heard Jens Lekman's "Into Eternity" on Sirius' "Left Of Center" and swear it could be an outtake from one of PDP's first two albums. Know nothing about Jens, but it's definitely got the PDP vibe.

Also noticed on their website www.poidogpondering.com that they have a CD coming out next year. The clips sound good!
