No, not a thread about Ben.

I got the idea for this conversation from an interview with Anton Corbijn where he talks about Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. He mentions that even though the album is some twenty-seven years old, it would still sound very modern were it to be released today.

What albums from the old days, if any, do you see fitting in with today's alternative music scene with credibility and relevancy?

The first album that comes to mind is Television's Marquee Moon (1977). It's almost eerie to listen to that album today and hear how influential and relevant that album is, from early R.E.M. to Interpol. The guitar work on that album is just phenomenal, and the production was so well-done, it just doesn't sound 30 years old.

Another album I think has held up well is Echo's Heaven Up Here, which still sounds amazing, but I'm unsure if it would fit into the mold of today's alternative/next wave sound.

Well, in a scene with Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and smaller bands similar to them... it's pretty clear that Gang Of Four's "Entertainment!" fits the scene... though really it inspired that scene.

On the contrary, if there's one place I'm not, it's in the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZone. Almost as big an injustice as the sale of sourced from vinyl CDs to unsuspecting customers.

<p align="justify">The first album that came to mind was NewOrder's [i]Technique[/i]. It has a very club dancefloor sound to it that still possesses relevance today. A lot of Pet Shop Boys and Erasure songs sort of pack the same Poppy wallop i.e. if "Opportunities" and "A Little Respect" did not exist in the 80s and would instead be teletransported to today, they'd be popular ringtones[}:)] Thank god things turned out the way they did[}:)][}:)]

I think Gary Numan's [i]Pleasure Principle[/i] still sounds very fresh and new, as does [i]Sleep No More[/i] by the Comsat Angels and The Sound's [i]All Fall Down[/i]. But it's been proven by a lot of people tha a surprising answer to this question is very much [i]Rio[/i] by Duran Duran, which within the past four or five years has received a renaissance of sorts by people who now view it as (at least unofficially) a part of the important musical canon, and the fact that [i]The Guardian[/i] (of all publications) listed that album as one of their picks for "1,000 Albums That Matter" means it's actually being regarded as important now.
