Actually, it was Devoto who put up the ad on the Bolton Institute notice board. Shelley responded. It was late 1975 and it was for a band they formed prior to Buzzcocks that broke up before playing anyway. Devoto and Shelley became friends and were later inspired to form a punk band after having witnessed Sex Pistols in 1976.



We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

The only reason I knew this is that my favorite band of all time is the Buzzcocks. I went back to check the story in a book I have on Buzzcocks and confirmed it with another source.
But wikipedia is pretty good

OK-here's another bit of trivia:

The Velvet Underground was named for the pulp SM novel "The Velvet Underground" which Tony Conrad found in the street on The Bowery in the mid-60s (imagine what the Bowery was like at that point!!).

Years later, Lou Reed went to a club in Philadelphia (Second Fret), and was told by the woman at the door "My father just died". When Reed responded with his condolences, she told him "He wrote the book".

Schwenko I recently picked up a Dream Syndicate cd titled "The Days Before Wine and Roses", which is a live radio show recording from 1982.

Listening to it now it's amazing how direct the Velvets influence was on that early incarnation of the band. Which of course got me to thinking about how unique the Velvets were compared to anything else being made in the late 60's...

BWD- yup- did you realize that before the VU, John Cale was in an experimental music ensemble called the Dream Syndicate?

OMG, "When You Smile" is one of my favorite songs EVER ! It was the first Dream Syndicate song I'd ever heard (off KAOS 89.5 FM in Olympia in like 1983) and I completely loved. However, only now, seeing your comment, do I hear and agree with your statement about that LP sounding sooooo much like VU !

Schwenko - I had no idea about the name connection...interesting!

KYYX4ever, that live cd is pretty raw, as it was recorded before they even released "The Days of Wine and Roses" (thus the cute title "The Days Before Wine and Roses"). Several of the songs turn into grinding Velvet style freakouts...and it's good stuff!
