Nicest Guy (or gal) you'd want to meet..

Anyone have any good stories of when they met a NW artist? Was it in the 80s or later in their career? What were the circumstances? How did they act?

I've been lucky to meet several of my muscial heroes--although most in the latter years of their career. I actually played foos-ball with Lloyd Cole-he seemed like a very nice guy. I've met the members of the Fixx twice and, Cy had a very good sense of humor and was fun to hang out with.

1976 (I was 15), I met Joey Ramone and Stiv Bators behind The Youngstown Agora (Ohio). The Ramones were playing there and Stiv was hanging around the back. Stiv is from Girard which is 5 minutes from Youngstown. I had no idea who he was at the time. I couldn't get in due to my age so I was out back with a friend when Joey and some others came out. Next thing I knew I was talking to both of them like we were old friends. Here it turns out that this was the first meeting of the two (or so I'm told). Joey was pretty cool. He didn't brush me off like some punk ass teenager. Stiv was pretty hyper. Bouncing around on the tips of his toes like he might have been on something. There were a few people back there so I might have met the rest of the Dead Boys and didn't even know it.

I met these people with no problems because I dressed and acted the part of someone who might have had a connection to them. I always seemed to be able to move about without anyone questioning who I was....and the girls! Sheesh. I got out of a car in Pittsburgh at a Flock of Seagulls concert (at The Electric Banana I believe) and people were screaming and rushing up to the car. Security helped me in the building! Ha ha ha! I loved those days.

Here's an odd one, I was at a Gary Numan concert (I believe it was one of his early tours over here) and I struck up a conversation with an older guy who looked like Gary. I knew that Gary's father sometimes toured with him (thanks to Trouser Press). He started asking me about peoples reactions to Gary in America. We went backstage with a couple of other people (press I believe) and had a conversation about new wave music and why it wasn't being played in certain areas. I was back there for about 1/2 hour. Nice guy. I didn't get to meet Gary though.

Wayne Famous (The Producers) in 1981. Really nice guy. Bought me a beer. Next time they came around he actually remembered me and bought me another beer.

Maybe one of these days I'll meet (in person) Dane and Marisa (Trees) or even Doug Lynner (Invisible Zoo). Will have to get off my ass to go see them.

I've seen The Fixx 16 times since 1991, so I've met/talked to everyone in the band a handful of times over the years. Nicest guys on the planet. They genuinely enjoy spending time with the fans after their gigs.

I met Doug Fieger, Berton Averre and Prescott Niles of the Knack after a show in 2002. Super nice guys. They were great.

Also, met Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones of the Monkees on their 1986 reunion tour. Again, great guys. Have since met Tork a second time and he was just as friendly.

Bono and The Edge - War Tour 1983. Super friendly, and they went out of their way to make sure all of us behind the concert hall got a chance to chat or get a signature.

Chrissie Hind and Martin Chambers - after a Pretenders show, 1984. Both were happy to sign a promo poster and were friendly, but not too chatty.

My favorite story is an "almost" meeting. I worked security when Thomas Dolby and Modern English played our college campus in 1984. Students who worked the show got different assignments...the guy next to me got the job of going down to the gym and picking up Thomas Dolby in the funky beat up campus Pinto. 10 minutes later, they came putting up the hill and out hops Thomas Dolby to do his soundcheck. Although I didn't talk to him, he didn't seem phased one bit that his transporation was in a beat-up Pinto by some scruffy college kid. He seemed like a really nice, unpretentious guy!

I posted these earlier, but I noticed the question is whether these stars were "nice" or not, so here is a brief description of said meetings:

Tim Burgess (The Charlatans) 1990: Got stoned in a circle of about 12 people in the bowels of some SDSU building....we were all "nice" after about 15 minutes.

Joey Santiago & David Lovering (The Pixies) 1991: smiled alot, answered questions when asked (was interviewing them for college paper), not very genuine. smiling but peeved.

Debbie Harry 1994: rode a lift down 25 flights in NYC to walk her dog. said "hi"...

Mark Mothersbaugh 1994: at Disney TV animation studio...I introduced myself :"Mark..." "yes?" he thought I was saying his name, which is my name...(the ole who's on first routine...)...then blurted out the most inane fanboy gibberish "I'm a big fan"

Paul Weller 1995: kind of an A-hole, to be expected considering my friends wife wanted us to chase the tour van to his hotel.

Alain Jorgensen 2006: coudnt be nicer. short. gold grill.
