Mike just finished the 2007 Top 100 poll here:

http://nwoutpost.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21823

At the risk of stepping on his toes, my inner geek just wouldn't allow me not to engorge myself on all the data here. I've therefore combined previous years' polls with this one to hopefully give a bit broader statistical slice of the NWO - 75 participants including some blasts from the past that'll make some grin.

Some notes: There were 3750 lines of entries. Out of that, 1924 total different songs were chosen. This means that there's also a ton of unique entries and that the absolute dissimilarities far outweigh similarities. To tabulate, I always took peoples' most recent poll submission, cut the list to the top 50 just so we're comparing apples to apples, gave 0.1 point to each song listed as a tiebreaker, and used the following point system

7 pts to each top song
6 pts to songs 2-5
5 pts to songs 6-10
4 pts to songs 11-20
3 pts to songs 21-30
2 pts to songs 31-40
1 pt to songs 41-50

And the NWO Cumulative Top 100 Songs ARE...

Here's a hierarchically clustered similarity matrix. Think of it as an upside-down tree. The closer you are on a branch to someone, the more closely your song and band selections are related to that person's. I've included Bands alone at 1/3 of their total point value in addition to Songs on the premise that picking the same band should count toward some similarity rather than none at all just because you picked different Songs.

Some summary comments:

Using a Spearman Rank Order algorithm with Weighted Centroid Clustering, we get two major clusters, A and B. The people within each cluster are more similar to eachother than anyone else in the other cluster. The B cluster has the fewer people with 21, for you elitists out there who value such things.

Cluster A has one major sub-cluster, A1, that includes three further sub-clusters, A1a-c, each about equally distributed in member numbers. The side-branch with 3 individuals, A2, is more dissimilar to anyone else in A1a, b or c. The five members in A3 are even more dissimilar and really just a hair more related to this group than B is.

Cluster B has two fairly equal branches plus a third individual that is a branch onto himself. I'm sure Eight6 is quite proud that he has alsomt no similarity to anyone else in the pool. There was something about Opera Prima's selections however that made him more similar to the rest of the poll than last time, though still in a fairly unique cluster.

Like I've mentiioned before though, with the huge diversity in songs selected, the clusters are more dissimilar even within clusters than similar. The only strong similarity conclusions one can draw is with fairly immediate neighbors. The most similar "individuals" are actually "GROUP", which is the NWO Top 50, and Ebbhead, who dethrones Otters as the previous most-similar to the average. But even they are only 41% similar. The next most similar are Rubbeet and Fanciz at 37%, along with some neighbors, DSR and empyrean. Hmmm, what could be the tie-in?? [:o)]

I have a personal interest in my cluster with SwampThing, Cubby, Manekineko and Club80. Besides it looking like fine comapny, I know at least three of them enjoy British Sea Power - I bet Club80 and Manekineko might as well. [8D] You guys see any other interesting correlations?

Fascinating.

Unfortunately I have a congenital defect which prevents me from raising my eyebrows independently.

Blir, you're a statistician and a gentleman, at least to the extent that those categories aren't mutually exclusive.

You know something . When I picked my top 100 songs , I was wondering if I'd end up in sub-cluster A1b . Sure enough , sub cluster A1b it is. [^]

It's time to state and highlight the odd unique items--I remember years ago when the Saturday night videos show (I think it was called Goodnight L.A. or something like that) had a night where they played video requests--and they made a point to show oddball ones that only received one vote. :)

I'd just like to know sometimes what "the rest of us" have all completely missed. [:D]

Very Nice!

Everything seems about right. I remember Nowhere Girl being higher up last time. Maybe i'm mistaken. Cool stuff…again!

Wait a minute...so this Blir'o'gram is of the most recent poll and not the last one? Fuck, I thought I went more mainstream this time.

I need to find a new board.

LOL!!! That is rather confusing. Damn lack of proofreading skills kicking me in the ass. By "last" I meant the Top 50 poll from a while back.

On the upside, my English skills are more than adequate for another board I yearn to be a part of.

Ah, that yearning to be apart from the crowd.

And this is from this poll...well half of it. I'd say another 1/3 was from the 2006 poll and probably a 1/6 from the 2005. I took the most recent listings that people had.
