Wow. I had forgotten how much Michael Bolton sucked before he "sold out" and started singing ballads.

OMG, for someone such as myself, a longtime fantasizer of life as an '80s teenager, this find is The Most Awesome Thing Ever. I mean, three hours of unadulterated MTV from the quintessentially '80s year of 1983! It can't get much more '80s than that! Fifteen-year-old me would SO be freaking out at this point, but present day me is just plain old verklempt. I am SO watching this RIGHT NOW.

Edit: OMG, I have just finished watching the first half of this and that was TEH AWESOMEST THING EVAH. I am serious. Even the bits that were quite crap in reality (I mean, dude, Kansas? Steve Miller? Michael "oh no I'm really a hard rockin' dude" Bolton?) were, in the grand context of everything, quite tolerable. But what I found especially cool were (a.) the vintage commercials, (b.) the slight iconoclasm of Mark Goodman (that *is* his name, isn't it?), and (c.) approximately the last 30 minutes or so of that video. In fact, by the time the video playlist had reached Nick Heyward I had achieved total permagrin status. I am even more convinced now that I was born in the wrong fucking decade. I mean, this? Shit, I would have NEVER gone to sleep if I had had this kind of thing available to me 24/7, WITHOUT having to rush to the computer to watch it. But I guess all of the above is pretty much "duh, we were expecting that kind of reaction" considering where I'm posting all of this from, huh?

Last year an old friend sent me 6 hrs. of 1983 MTV, which had been copied from video to DVD. I loved it ! deethelurker's observations were spot-on---yeah, we make fun of some of those terrible Huey Lewis videos, but come on! They are still cooler than most videos today ! The commercials were priceless, especially the Atari ones. The whole milieu of the MTV studio was so cool, yet still cheesy and goofy. Who cares. This was a fun part of our lives and we were lucky to have been around for this the first time around ! The 80s were so awesome, like totally for sure.[:o)]

Very cool. I didn't see MTV until late 1991, and it already had started to circle the drain at that point, so it's pretty cool to see what I missed.

Okay, an update of all the video watching I did. I had a much more visceral reaction to the second half of this 3 hour block of '83 MTV. I guess because so much of the first half was taken up by hard rock stuff and I really hate hard rock music *aside from* Def Leppard and Metallica. I was overtaken by emotion when I saw the video for "One Step Ahead", which is perhaps my favorite Split Enz song/video (tossup between that and "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" TBH) and then right after that they played The Fixx's "Red Skies" and all I was able to do was sob out, "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God." When they announced Spandau Ballet coming up (SB being one of my very favorite musical artists) I literally screamed like a teenaged girl, and then the programming people came in with "Back On The Chain Gang", and let me tell you, Chrissie Hynde is my favorite female vocalist and her voice never fails to move me so yeah, you can imagine the big fat tears that were running down my cheeks at that point.

I took the liberty to download the second half (I've been watching these videos directly from Google Video's site and they have an option to download these videos for uploading onto a video iPod) and I *will* be putting this onto my own iPod the next time I hook that baby up to my computer.

Also, thanks KYYX4ever. You guys have absolutely nothing to be ashamed about if this is indicative of the full range of your '80s adolescence's pop culture. Everything was glorious, everything was entertaining without being overly dumbed down or just plain old stupid to begin with, nothing made you feel as though you'd be better off watching CNN the way things were in my own overearnest '90s adolescence, etc.

please find footage from that year was MTV was airing(in light rotation) "Thunder In The Mountains" by Toyah, even though she never got a US record deal...great stuff

toyah, please don't be offended but I think most of us are already keenly aware of Toyah Wilcox/her music career.

Yesterday I got busted by my boss at work; it was after lunch and I was watching that second half of the three hour block on my video iPod after starting to watch it during lunchtime. But she was cool about it. She aleady knows about my '80s obsession and told me, "You can return to your real adolescence when you finish up those two projects you owe me." I worked like a fiend and was able to go back and finish watching the video before it was time to go home.
