New Wave Outpost Forum

Here in Salt Lake, one of the local alternative radio station has been playing nothing but the great 80s new wave stuff. It was the first time in I don't know how long that over-the-air radio in this city has been worth listening to. It's been like going back in time to my college days.

If it wasn't for Sirius 22 and a link I found on this site a few weeks ago, I doubt I would only have my CD collection for music.

Do you good folks around the country/world have a radio station with a format that makes it worth your time to tune in?

We have a tiny little station in Killington, VT that is sometimes worth listening to. I don't know what exactly their "format" is (they call themselves world class rock), but they're all over the place. They just seem to play what they want (especially the morning show guy) and you never know what you're going to get. It's not all new wave or punk by any stretch, but there are healthy doses of it mixed in with everything else under the sun.

The all-request 5 pm thing is especially a trip ... Friday they went from James Brown into Dio. It also has to be the only station in the country to have played Cheech and Chong's "Basketball Jones" in the last 30 years. Gotta love that. [:D][:D]

I live on Long Island and the answer is no...not at all! We have a station that occasionally plays all 80's weekends but it isn't all new wave and you have to get past the Madonna and Journey songs. It is really surpising that we don't have one. I don't think I'm out of line saying that KROQ in Los Angeles and WLIR on Long Island were the biggest new wave stations of their time. Now...we have nothing.



We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

KJQ in Salt Lake is lesser known than KROQ and WLIR is are, but it first started playing new wave almost exclusively back in '81. Now, it's the Salt Lake Jack FM affiliate. [V]

What's the playlist like now? I mean, is it permanently new wave or is it for a limited time?

KNDD 107.7 in Seattle has been playing a new wave show every Sunday morning from 8 AM - Noon for many years now. It covers the era from the beginning of punk up through about 1990. While the featured band of the week is always one of the big name new wave artists, there are lots of lesser known gems sprinkled in between.

The play list now here on KENZ 101.9 is pretty much only the alternative stuff from the '00s with some 90s alternative and once in a blue moon some 80s new wave.

About 3 or so years ago when KENZ took over as the alternative station, I would say about 1/3 of the music was new wave, but as any good station is, it went the route it's listeners wanted and is now more what the kids listen to these days. My teenagers love it. I just listen to satellite.

I don't find myself listening to the radio much anymore either. I am too frequently disappointed
