This is aimed at all you Lambretta lovin' geezers out there. When was the single defining moment back in the day which made you decide to adopt the Mod lifestyle and how has that experience influenced or changed you in the years since?

I've always considered myself a Mod at heart. Though I could rarely afford it!

I know my answer, but will have to formulate into words... and I'm on a deadline right now...

I'm guessing I really couldn't afford it back in the day, I was a poor Mod, only two suits, and a few Fred Perry shirts, once I bought a used Vespa, just cheap gas and insurance back then, very economical, wrote my scooter 4 out of 5 years while attending CSULB. I will write up 1978 and my summer in Germany 1979 as the start of my Mod roots, as well as seeing Quadraphenia a few dozen times... [8D]

I was never a "mod" per se... I loved The Jam, The Lambrettas, Merton Parkas etc, alot of my friends in 1982-1986 were full blown Mods, (my one friend Glen appeared on the cover of an international Scooter Mag...I rode bitch alot.

I was more "New Ro" and dug the dance clubs. there were more (and hotter) chicks...

that being said, I now ride scoots and enjoy it alot. Going to vegas for a big scooter "convention"(High Rollers) in mid February....

To be fair, The Exploited were a good Oi! band. Lots of energy and conviction in their beliefs. Dead Cities and Sex And Violence are classics. However, Fuck A Mod was not the high point of their literary career



We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

No Oi movemnt if the Mods hadn't split into Art School crowd and the Skinhead crowd back in 1965/'66-ish... Those skinheads listened to Ska/Rocksteady, and then became Suedheads (grew hair out), Smoothies (grew hair out further: think Slade/Bay City Rollers/The Sweet and those clothes to wear), and somehow developed into Punk Rock movement, 2-Tone exploded (ska revival-wave two), then Oi was born and became fashionalbe... from what I remember from reading the UK books The Mods and Skinheads... need to find those books in the garage, they are great!!!

I basically became a Mod because I liked scooters, had friends in high school who were Mods, and it was really cool clique to hang with in high school, after garduation from HS, I attended CSULB and helped found Club Impact in 1984, although a bunch of us were scooterists/Mods hanging at the university since 1983-ish... and I had two roomamtes that had scooters and were former Mods from Orange County... We became the premiere scooter club in Southern California, besides Secret Society in San Diego.

I liked the fashion, the music: power pop, soul (Stax, Tamala, etc.--really never Motown, to mainstream!), northern soul, ska, rocksteady (while in my skinhead phase!) and motor scooters!!!

Now loving new wave and other forms of music made me somewhat anti-Mod, as folks in that "scene" have a very narrow-minded view of musical taste to say the least...

So here we are in 1985-ish at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, CA meeting up (I;m smack in the middle!)

Right here, right now... I was waiting for you to ask, not really, had to get the old "photobucket" out and d-l, etc. Anyway...

My old scooter club, Club Impact is planning a reunion dinner set for May 31st and a huge/big summer or labor-day weekend, not sure yet, blow out concert... so far we have the band [b]Squire[/b] lined-up to play (keep fingers crossed), and old power pop/mod band from back in the day... SO I asked Rotator to produce a flyer for the Las Vegas "High Roller" Scooter Run, so we can start the publicity, and market the event. Here is the great piece of art he developed:
