Sons Of Freedom

A Canadian band you probably have never heard of, their self titled debut album from 1988 is excellent.

My favorite would be Garbage (but, as their first album came out in 1995, that may be later than you were looking for).

If you like Lush, absolutely check out Curve. They are one of my favorites.
The Catherine Wheel were awesome too.
If you like Julianna Hatfield, check out the Lemonheads

I also kind of liked the Judybats back then.

Beck, though maybe he's more mid-90s.

One of the BEST bands is Slowdive (not named after the Siouxsie song of the same name), particularly "Souvlaki" (1993). Another band I might suggest is Secret Shine - "After Years" (1991) is a good compilation of their stuff. And, I concur with many of the bands above like Jesus & Mary Chain, Pixies, The Stone Roses, Charlatans UK ("Some Friendly"), Lush, Ride, Curve, Mazzy Star, and, of course, Cocteau Twins.

And maybe also the Blake Babies. [:D]

Check out the 4 CD Brit Box boxed set that Rhino put out Christmas. Lots of good stuff on there.

I gotta second the Catherine Wheel suggestion, they should be on my list, too. Their first two albums, Ferment and Chrome, are fantastic.
