Everybody's favorite dead horse, R.E.M., is slated to release a new album, "Accelerate", on April 1. The sample I heard of "Supernatural Superserious" wasn't bad but sounds like it could have come from the last album... or the one before that.
Does R.E.M. have anything more to offer that would get you excited or should these guys give it up before they turn into The Rolling Stones? Opinions?

I think they reached a plateau with AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE and since then the records have been hit or miss. It's nice to know they still like to record together but after losing Bill Berry they probably should've folded up shop and moved on.

I'd add the "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" was a great album. But, since Berry left, it's been all downhill. I read an article a couple years ago that said R.E.M. should be renamed "The Michael Stipe Experience", and I agree. They've never recovered from losing Berry. Every new release I hear from them sounds more and more like a singer who has hired a band than a unified group.
That's not to say they don't still occasionally produce a great tune. I thought "Suspicion" was a great song. But I'm long past buying any new material from them.

Chronic Town, Murmur and Reckoning period: Possibly the best band on earth.
Up through Automatic for the People: A very good band.
Since: A band that produces a decent song once in a while.

Is there confirmation of the Summer tour with Modest Mouse and The National opening? I've actually haven't seen them since 1987 at the Felt Forum, so I got to see them this time, and I love the National and been meaning to see them too.

Out Of Time overexposed them, so when Automatic came out I avoided it for a while. Monster was the nail in the coffin, as I viewed it as an aging band trying to fit in. I've avoided everything since, though have heard the occasional bit, all of which has been unremarkable. Chronic Town through Pageant was the best period, Document and Green have some great songs, Out Of Time has a few standout tracks, and Automatic is better (though I HATE Man On The Moon). As far as I'm concerned, they died in a tragic plane crash after that...

^^^ I can understand all the lyrics...what's up with that! ^^^
I always liked it when Michael would mumble the lyrics, and you tried to decipher them.

I'm happy that they are still making music....but, I'm also really glad I can just drop by iTunes and only buy the one or two new songs I like. They really have been hit or miss for me for a long time, and I've been cherrypicking their songs like that a while.
