New Album is nice, Love Early and Provision but Cupid & Psyche is amazing.

Anyone have any Scritti Politti stories to share?

I'm sorry to say that is one of the few 80's band that makes me feel nothing...

You know, they were supposed to live in a squat, talking and drinking all night long, night after night to change the world, social injustice and politics, they were open to musical contributions or ideas from anyone spending a night in the squat... and then the result, easy to see in "Cupid & Psyche", is no more than a soul-less void of easy listening half-dance pop. Dissapointing.

But I may be wrong, since is a band very well received for European fans of cool 80s and best music journalists in England...

For me Green Gartside is one of the most over-rated (if not THE most) 80s songwriters.

I hope taht this opinion does not blow down your recently discovered love for the band.

Green lost the plot early on sure, but check out their REALLY early stuff and it's a whole different animal. Very experimental, oddly structured post-punk funk similar in spirit to Gang Of Four, Au Pairs & Delta 5. No indications of the horribly banal dance music he would produce later on. "Skank Bloc Bologna" is a classic!

I'll try, SuNomi, thanks. Although I think I did anytime and did not got the point. All that punk-funk thing is one of the first I like less of that glorious first half of the 80s.

I pretty much agree with most of the sentiment re Scritti....the first (?) 12" "Sweetest Girl" was quite good ---kind of dubby,,,,

MT, I am a huge fan of C&P and the latest album. Anhomie and Bonhomie is about half great, too. C&P is way overdue for a remaster.

I think I'm one of few who likes ALL of SPs material. The EARLY (album) Rough Trade stuff. Songs To Remember, Cupid & Psyche'85, Provision,
early 90's singles, Anhomie and Bonhomie and White Bread, Black Beer.

Although I can see why some people would think that's is dull. Cupid & Psyche'85 is sunshiney almost psyche-dance-pop. I love the Gang Of Four early stuff. I love Green's voice! Etc...

Yes! Big fan of Cupid & Psyche '85 as well as Provision. Their early stuff is rough around the edges in the best way. Skank Bloc and Jaques Derrida were my favorite early tracks.

Along with Vitamin Z, I think Scritti is the absolute WORST of anything remotely considered New Wave/Alternative. That wet, white boy soul music with that androgynous bug voice makes me want to punch the wall! Though that's just my own feeling on the matter...

Yeah, I remember tollerating them at the time of the release of'Wood Beez' etc, 'cos chicks liked them... but secretly I despised them, I still never play the 12" that I have...*BUT* , again the "Sweetest Girl" 12" was quite good...

To me they were like Wham! minus the "street cred".

"Androgynous bug voice" (so cracking up). As you well know, I WORSHIP this LP. Funny that I'm not big on what came before or after.

I just recently picked up the "Early" Scritti Politti and it's unlistenable but I have to agree with pinkyblue82 because 'Cupid & Pysche '85' is a great album and only like one song after that period which is "Boom! There She Was"

Does anyone out there understand the relationship between Scritti and Miles Davis? Miles played on 'Provision' which I never really understood, why he would have an affinity for this band (of all bands).

I don't think Scritti was as lousy as some here do. "C&P" sounded like nothing else when it came out, and it still sounds good to my ears today. If anything, they're guilty of becoming "Star Hits" fodder based on Green's good looks, but that's no reason to hate them. While I don't think he necessarily 'sold out', he indeed DID change alot from the image he projected early on when on Rough Trade (kind of a radical communist -type).

I first discovered them on the "Wanna buy a Bridge" comp then went from there.
