Spies Like Us

Do you suppose if someone like Suburban Lawns or Oingo Boingo or Lene Lovich had performed the theme song to Spies Like Us that we all would have thought "what a neat, quirky little song", instead of viewing the McCartney version as a rotten, stinking pile of dung?

My Lord, what brought this question on? I had forgotten about this song and had to hear it before answering. Here's the video:

I think the song is a stinking pile no matter who sings. I don't give Devo any slack for the awful theme to "Doctor Detroit".

In a word: yes. But in more words...
Because Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd had been stars since the mid 70's with SNL, the use of any 80's New Wave artist/group would have been (imo) an odd pairing.

or if Comsat Angels did Mr. Roboto?
Fact is, although few of us would admit it,many times we judge a song based on ourr opinion of teh artist who recorded it and not as a stand-alone song.

Conversely, what if Taco had done Cars? Would it still be a classic?
What if the Village People had done Doot Doot? Well, it would still suck but at least you could dance to it.
