Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock"

I popped this in at work tonight and instantly remembered why this hasn't seen the laser light of my CD player in a decade or so. Is there a story behind this piece of pretentious dross? Were they trying to get out of their contract by delivering a steaming pile of new age crap to their record label? Were they attempting to cast off the new wave label by becoming avante-garde "artistes?" Why don't the drums care what the rest of the song is doing? They shouldn't have released this under the Talk Talk name. I only got through track 4 before my shift ended. I'll listen to the rest on Monday. Wish me luck.

I don't get it either. I remember the day the guy at the used record shop recommemened it to me. He said it was their best. I took it home played it once and never listened to it again. I sold it shortly after.

Wow ... I really like that album ("New Grass" is my favorite from the album), but I will be the first to admit that it's very challenging and a bit overrated, favoring improvisation and organic sound over structure and melody. Still, THE COLOUR OF SPRING
